King Philip Shipwreck is back

26

In 1878 the King Philip wrecked just south of what is now ###### St at Ocean Beach. The remains have been buried under the sand, but every now and then due to erosion, some of the remains are unearthed. I remember seeing the wreck in 2007, and a quick internet search shows that the last time the boat was visible before that was in the 1980s.

Last weekend I was walking my bulldog and he started sniffing around at what I remembered was part of the shipwreck, and today on a run I saw that much more of the front of the boat is exposed.

As a history teacher, it's hard for me to not geek out about this. I love that we can add a shipwreck to the list of fabled characters affiliated with Ocean Beach. It enhances the rugged charm of the place. Head down there and check out the history that litters our beach. When it goes back underground, who knows when it'll next show up again.

I was getting out of the water on Thursday, and I saw that metal piece sticking out of the ground and was wondering what hell that thing was. Thanks for the info!

I love this "history underfoot" stuff.

Another interesting O.B. history item:

Carville By The Sea was an impromptu neighborhood in the Outer Sunset District It was notable for its reuse of abandoned horsecars (horse-drawn trolleys) and, later, cable cars as or serving as parts of cottage, houses and public buildings. Carville was located near the intersection of 47th Ave. and ###### Streets, just south of the western end of Golden Gate Park.

Oh, btw, the last time the King Philip was exposed, in 2007, the City put an informational plaque/sign at the entrance to ###### which gave the history of the ship & the wreck. Was actually pretty impressive.
