Tourists are greeted by a friendly grey whale whilst whale watching in San Ignacio Lagoon, Mexico. These whales are almost certainly the most friendly in the world. The good-natured seafaring giants will swim right up to human visitors, who can dip their faces into the sea to plant a kiss on the heads of the huge 40-ton sea mammals.
I went down for a session at Grey Whale Cove on Saturday. It had been too long since I'd been out and when I got down to the beach the waves were a whole lot bigger than they looked from the cliff. (They always are down there.) It was pretty messy and, being out of shape, it took me a while to get out to the line up. When I punched through the last wave of a good sized set, however, I saw a big, black, barnacled hump rolling through the water about ten feet in front of me.
Scared the bejeezus outta me.
I immediately felt bad for swearing so much. ("Shit! Fuck! Dave, a fucking whale! Sweet fucking shit!") I hope I didn't offend it! A whale... I'm stoked.
Back when they were hunted, their nickname was Devifish because they trashed and killed so many people. Amazing how they figured out we're not a threat anymore and their behavior has changed so radically.
Pacifica Beach Coalition dedicated their Earth Day of Action & Celebration last Saturday to the Grey Whale...they are becoming extinct, very sad. The whales, not the coalition ;-).

Piss, you're still in denial---we were all there that glassy morning at S10at when Scratchy kept begging us to make the evil dolphins stop. They never did stop, and we will never shed the guilt of our idleness. ("but all he wanted was a little scratch by the barnacle on his nose...")
