Leash the dogs at Bay Area parks

2608

The Bay Area's biggest federal park has taken on an unwinnable topic: curbing dogs along the cliffs, paths and beaches overlooking the bay and ocean. Some of the region's most beautiful outdoors comes with the roughest politics and toughest decision making.

On balance, federal authorities have it right in imposing more controls. Dogs - said to outnumber children in San Francisco - can trample undergrowth, harm wildlife and bother park visitors. Leashing dogs, instead of letting them run free, is a reasonable option in this well-used landscape.

Stacey is always curbed and as a model doggie citizen she's on leash for everyone else's comfort. TODOS SOMOS Diane Whipple.

I've noticed a lot of stoke reporters don't seem to be dog people. As you mentioned, you live in a city with a lot of dogs. So just deal with it and quit whining

seriously? All of golden gate park requires dogs on leash. I agree with the restriction to the ###### of the beach, but come on man. Let this one go. You're a surfer, just mellow out and work on your surfing

Stacey may indeed be leashed but her penchant for taste testing other dogs' genitalia is a behavior which, IMO, disqualifies her from "model doggie citizen".

There's that cliche: dogs take after their owners.

leash humans

hasbro, case by case basis isn't possible. Yours are angels, and I'm not kidding. If every dog owner were as attentive and responsible as you, there wouldn't be an issue. But there is :(
If we could leash humans when their dogs act up, it certainly would provide a better solution, but a sentient being on a string, as determined by the courts, for the most part, doesn't carry to the owner sadly.

@burro: OMG. I've never seen a dog that gussied up before. I'll bet her owner is a 50 year old very horny cougar.

Another case of the clueless self absorbed mindless ding dongs ruining it by assuming everyone else loves and understands their dogs as much as they do. I have two dogs and try to be mindful of the fact that other people may in fact be afraid of dogs, especially dogs that they don't know. When walking dogs one needs to make an effort to communicate that the dogs are okay and most importantly that you are in charge of the dogs. If people are picnicking, or little children are running around then maybe the dogs should be put on a leash, at least until you are out of the area. And don't let them terrorize the wildlife. It's not all that difficult but requires real focussed mindfulness and not everybody has the brains or whatever it takes to be able to do that. Once again legislation is forced to arrive with its sledge hammer solutions mainly (I think) because some (not all) of the dog people are just too fucking stupid to responsibly handle their dogs. pant...pant...pant

@Shiver, Ive been the picnicker in that exact situation lol. Sitting down on the beach, full picnic spread out, just about to tuck in, knife in hand to carve off some hot chicken... when.... someones mongrel storms through getting sand and grass and wet dog seawater through everything, trying to grab any food it can.... Nearly had dog sandwiches haha!

@bombsquad and wavecraver... word. ive got no problem with dogs on leash, or dogs in control, but if you are a dog owner at a beach with people (esp if kids present) chilling on sand, and there is even a 1% chance that your dumb ass pet might run all over our chill time, kicking sand in our face or on our food or in our drinks or on our kids, then keep the dog on a leash.

Seen it happen too many times... to myself, my family, others... my wife and i have noticed the clueless dogs are usually matched with clueless owners.

It's simple: Owners - watch your dogs and pick up after them. If your dog terrorizes children or wildlife, don't let them off leash. The only reason the law is stepping in is because of clueless dog owners.

Passing a law (or establishing a local ordinance, etc) and being resourced to enforce it thoroughly are two very different things.

I imagine they can manage enforcing @ Crissy Field but will be challenged at Funston (just by volume, if folks decide to ignore the new regs) and almost completely unable to do anything to alter behavior around Rancho Corral De Tierra, particularly the areas they can't SEE from many points of observation.
