Leashless in a Santa Cruz

Rant - Leashless in a Santa Cruz

Yesterday afternoon at Capitola, when I was paddling back out, a longboarder wiped out ~25 feet ahead of me and I had to scramble out of the way of her rouge rogue surfboard (it was actually red). The board ended up near me so I caught and held it as she swam in. I asked "Did your leash break?" but she turned away and paddled off quickly, pretending not to have heard. She also ignored my "Hey, you're not going leashless out here, are you?" and "Your board almost hit me!" I saw that she was in fact, surfing a crowded break without a leash.

I don't care how good you are, or think you are, if you don't wipe out sometimes you're not trying. And when you lose it on a wave, your board's going to become an uncontrolled projectile. It's simply irresponsible to surf in a crowd without a leash. Someone could get hurt. Like me, or my new custom surfboard. And then there would be tears.

Sounds about as frustrating as my frequent almost-sideswipings by inattentive drivers. I can go up to them and inform them of their egregious wrongdoing, but they either pretend not to hear me or give me a sheepish look and drive off.

I hope you're not still angry :(

I hear ya surfergrrrl! I have been known to surf leashless (especially with my 60s style Junod, that doesn't have a leash plug), but I do my best to stay away from crowds. Had some great leashless rides at Bo yesterday sundown, well away from other people :)

So:
leashless crowd surfing = bad
leashless alone surfing = good

That person owes you a thank you and an apology. Surfing without a leash is a bad idea for yourself and everybody around you. On occasion I see people surfing at Linda Mar with out leashes and think surfing a crowded spot the closes out often without a leash is idiotic. I've asked people why they surfing leash-less and they start babbling about soul.

Note: If it is uncrowded do as you please.

Take your leash off some time and try a few waves. Everything changes: where you sit, the waves you choose, the sections you try to make. All of it, completely different -- and not in a bad way. For the right person, with the right mentality and experience, shedding that kook-cord is a fun way to spice up a generally gutless and kelp-infested break like Capitola.

So if said lady knew what she was doing and had control of her board at all other times, and just lost it this one occasion...I'd cut her some slack. It happens. Nobody got hurt. If she was bailing on every other wave, yeah, give her an earful. But don't knock it unequivocally before you've tried it. After all it's not as if a 9ft longboard on a 10ft leash in the hands of an overwhelmed novice isn't a formidable projectile in its own right.

Curmudgeon out.

I agree with you curmudgeon.. I have surfed w/o and it tuned me up quick!
On the other hand it was not on a waikiki day at LM (or anywhere else) and I would not have done it then... just does not seem right..
I don't have strong feelings about SUP'ers in general but seeing one of those things flying around leash or no leash does not make me happy and kinda reminds me of a time I was on a sailboat near an oil tanker....

[edit] hmm, how can I delete my own comment?

The last longboard i ordered, i specifically requested not to have a leash loop or plug. Anyone riding a longboard with a leash instantly losses my respect. I don't think you should be judging people for surfing leashless at cap, thats pretty much the point

I used to log a lot, and still do occasionally. I rarely lose my board, but i have. But nothing will teach you how to surf well like riding a heavy longboard w/o a 'kook cord,' negotiating nose rides and cutbacks.

In fact, several times a year I'll ride one of my logs in sizeable ob w/o a leash just a reminder of what surfers use to have to do!! in that case, i suggest surfers be prepared for flying 20 lbs surfboards?!

Kool-aid - you've got to be kidding me. Maybe your skills are so vastly superior...but I'm guessing it's just your ego. Your board hits me in the head, I'm taking the leash off my fists.

If you want to surf leashless, I say go ahead. Just don't endanger anyone else doing it. A crowded break in Santa Cruz is not the right place, and I don't care how kelpy it is.

I'm a big fan of the no-leash-but-I'm-wearing-a-helmet look.

The intense no-leash guy is the red headed stepchild to the ultra shortboard guy. Same idea just different wave tools.

She did say thanks before she scurried away.
