today at 12:05 PM at LM myself and about 40-50 other people witnessed a shark attack. It happened about 150 yards beyond the lineup midway between the bathhouse and ######. All I saw was bright red blood shooting into the air and much turbulance and swirling in the water. A 20-30 ft diameter pool of red was all that remained after the attack. Seagulls swooped in immediately to finish off the remains. Personal testimony: It was the most frightening and spine chilling event I have ever seen!!!! And sorry for the scoop @sharky.

I'm just going to assume that the victim was not a person, since it is not specified. (?)

first the landlord always collects the rent!
I wonder if anyone really minds specific location tags on shark reports...

ya sea su criterio de la distancia es muy mala o si está lleno de mierda, nadie pudo ver que tanto detalle a partir de 150 yardas.

A few years ago I actually saw an adult seal (or some other pinniped) kill a juvenile seal in our fair city. Regardless of whether its a seal or shark that does the killing, you can always use the birds interest in entrails as a sign to get the F out of the water. They aren't the only critters interested in chum...they are just the ones you can see.

Lucky it was a poor surf day. On good surf days the pinnipeds, and hence any sharks in the area, are much closer to the lineup. At least for now, say, for the fall season, I'd stay away from the beach on good surf days.

@zurrfy, you need the following items, Burro told me....
1) complete chain mail
2) GoPro
3) full dry suit (7/8 mil)
4) spear gun
5) Harbor Hull 10' or a 60's Bing.
6) helmet.
Then you're set for the good days at LM.

@aardvark, do I need to buy one for every board I ride? Cause I ride a lot of boards... as you know.
I may have to stick with Hello Kitty decals!

That is honestly pretty damn awesome. I saw something similar at Bolinas a while back, but it lacked the gushing blood fountain. That would have been rad.

@tehdely, I remember that because (like today) I was in the water at that beach a short time beforehand.

I saw a juvenile breach, thrash, and eat something outside of the lineup at LM two years back around this time of year. Two other people saw it and one guy who didn't laughed at me. I actually stayed out because I figured the shark was gonna be well fed and therefore uninterested.

The shark is growing with every news article--the sf chronicle puts it at 18-25 ft. Seriously? We all know Uncle Pedro is 12ft, maybe 13 on a good day.

That's stupid to put the shark at 18-25 ft. for a few reasons:
1) The biggest specimens ever confirmed scientifically were around 20 feet. Those weighed 4000 lbs. A 25 ft. Great White? Since volume changes proportional to the cube of the length, a 25 footer would weigh 7 or 8 thousand lbs. I don't think so.
2) The witnesses to the shark @ SMLM didn't have a point of reference. If you don't have an object of known size with which to compare the shark to, you don't know if it's 12 feet or 20 feet.

Some really old dude at OB this morning was all lost & confused by the fact that southern Great Highway was closed. After explaining to him how to continue south, he told me that he had just heard on the radio that a 25' shark was spotted south of OB. Awesome. I didn't have the heart to explain to him that 25' wasn't really possible.
Next we'll find out that it wasn't actually a shark, it was a liger.

Love the Chronicle!!
"Police posted signs on the beach alerting the public and suggesting caution before entering the water."
Caution AFTER entering the water might be better advice.
Especially with that 8,000lb-er lurking out there looking for a 5'6" toothpick.

Read the excellent book "The Devil's Teeth" about the Farallone Islands and the Great Whites who visit every fall.
Female GWs there have been measured at 24 feet. 8' wide and 6' tall at the biggest part of their girth!
Males usually top out at 18 feet.
Interestingly, the females only come during even years - e.g. 2010
This could very well have been a "sister" as biologists like to call them.

@magic_surf_bus: I'd like to believe they get that big just as much as anyone else so long as it's scientifically verified. Eight feet wide and six feet tall? That's way, way bigger than the average sized shark. It'd be similar in scale beyond the norm to a 10 foot human being.
Here are a few links which describe the largest reports, most of which are shown to be exaggerations.

Maybe it was this guy.......
A practical joker in Massachusetts has taken advantage of recent shark sightings and caused a scare with a fake fin.
Police say about 50 people were drawn to a Somerset, Mass., cove on Wednesday night after someone reported seeing a shark fin in the water. Police tell the Herald News of Fall River that several 911 calls came in to Somerset and Swansea police.
Responding officers soon realized that the "shark" was just a piece of Styrofoam cut into a fin shape, wrapped in gray duct tape and weighted down.
There was no word on who pulled the prank.
Several Massachusetts beaches have been closed this summer after shark sightings. Police cautioned that the joke could have caused a problem had there been a real emergency call.

@Hodad: we human beings are fascinated by creatures which are able to eat us.
If someone posted a story about a seeing a sardine feed on some phytoplankton in the lineup, I'm guessing it'd get about zero comments.

I could not read all the comments but I remember about 7 years ago taking this friend of mine out for the first time at LM. We were by that ###### place and I am encouraging him to paddle out to beat the swell. He got pummeled but was into it and made it out. I am a terrible surf instructor. Then from out of nowhere a sea lion comes up out of the water with a huge salmon in its mouth just chomping away. There is blood everywhere then the whole scene just disappears under the water. It freaked both of us out. So this was the only time this guy goes out surfing and gets some once in a lifetime nature show. Such is life on a surf board.
