Very cool, love the magical one hour phenomenon description, and the paddle gets touched on quite a bit.

EXACTLY!! Listen closely to Andy time-and-again talk of 1 hour windows, endless rows of white water, cold, miserable, testy, shifty...that is the theme of his narrative in that vid..and not perfect waves. This will probably rankle those who view surfing Ocean Beach as a badge of courage, with conditions more likely to endure than enjoy, and I will likely get thumbed-down to oblivion for saying this, but OB is to a large extent OR..over rated. And the only reason Rip Curl is hosting here, as everyone already knows, is for the dollar value of being close to a 4 million metro population...contestable waves be damned.

@sharkturd it's only over rated if you miss the windows. a very large portion is luck.
looks like solid swell coming for the beginning of the contest window:

....watch the colors light up around 174-180hrs out. I was worried that the n.pacific was shutting down for the beginning of the contest window. looks like its firing up.

@fatnewt, fair enough...but it takes more than a 1 hour window to hold a contest.

OB is what it is. Powerful, shifty beach break bowls that hold shape at any size. Kudos to those kids for sharing some epic photos and giving props to the older dudes charging in hoods and booties.

I'm just going to love watching the pros paddle non-stop for 30mn at a time just to hold their position in the shifty line-up. Line up? What line up?

Captured a lot of the elements that makes OB what it is. The way the windows work here is part of the day it could be awesome, part absolute shit, and mostly in-between. Plus the odd set or wave anytime. I'm really looking forward to how the pros deal with the benchmark for tough paddleouts on a solid swell. Hoping for double-o.

A certain blog described why men in San Francisco become ass men rather than boob men as simply as "there are no boobs in SF" (paraphrased). I learned to love OBSF for its shapeliness...though I'd take back OBSD (or at least the Cliffs) in a heartbeat.
