Long shot: Nicaragua surfing on the Caribbean side (near Bluefields)?

Rant - Long shot: Nicaragua surfing on the Caribbean side (near Bluefields)?

I've been surfing OB for a few years now and a SR lurker for a while. I'm a fan of the site and the positive vibes and sense of community it has created. I'll be moving down to Nicaragua for a year in the first week of January. Unfortunately, I won't be anywhere near the Pacific side as I'll be volunteering with an organization in a small town on the Caribbean side, called Bluefields.

I have scoured the interweb in search of anything about surfing the Caribbean side of Nicaragua. As it is quite remote and undeveloped, there virtually nothing but passing remarks about the possibility of surf here. I realize this is a long shot, but does anyone know of anything about waves here? I don't think I'll be stepping on any toes with this request, given that I'll probably be the only surfer on that entire stretch of coast, but feel free to email me directly if you would prefer. Thanks and I will miss SFOB!

There's a section on wannasurf.com that lists about 11 surf spots in Nicaragua. Hard to tell if they are pacific or carib side, but I bet with a map you could figure them out. I think you'll have to register to see this, not sure, but here is the direct link to Nicaragua:

Oh, also, the World Stormrider Guide might have some info. Based on your post, it's entirely possible none of this is new to you but maybe it will help.

Good luck and have fun!

I think you are going to score...

The Caribbean gets some sick swell from constant trade winds, look at Salsa Brava in Costa Rica for some inspiration. One thing Nicaragua does have, is a wider continental shelf that will knock down some of the swell.
also, it might be a rare day when its offshore, but like many tropical places, early morning should have lighter winds.

Good luck, and when some of those tropical storms come through the Caribbean in the Summer, you should be in pretty good shape
