Mavericks competition brews with El Niño swells

2122

Organizers and Mother Nature just might be on the Mavericks Invitational surf contest's side this year.

The Mavericks Surf Company announced on Wednesday that it had already attained a limited commercial activity permit that will let the international event take place, allowing the world's top big-wave surfers to strut, or surf, their stuff.

The list of competitors has also been announced. Twenty-four invitees from last year's canceled competition will return for another shot at riding the big-wave off Pillar Point.

Pacifica's Matt Ambrose and Santa Cruz residents Ryan Augenstein, Ken "Skindog" Collins, Shane Desmond, Shawn Dollar, Peter Mel, Tyler Smith, Anthony Tashnick and Zach Wormhoudt intend to battle the expected 20-foot-high walls of water.

I'm betting the contest producers would like to hold it as early in the window as possible, hoping for any residual interest from the bump and buzz of a recently released Hollywood movie. Something I observed in the trailer, the Butler character telling Jay, "the wave is a myth, and the four of us surfing it intend to keep it that way"...all the while the reality was that wave-discoverer, Jeff Clark, was telling everyone and anyone that would listen about the legendary wave. Which leads me to ask, is it a surfer thing, or just human nature for feeling ownership or a sense of entitlement of something just by virtue of getting in on the ground floor or jumping on a bad wagon earlier than another? Just wondering.

Jeff may be an "asshole" but he is an accredited one. Mavericks is a killer wave in every sense of the word. the movie is surfsploytation shite and will end up where it belongs. at the end of the day Mavericks contests are about the money. bring a lawyer of go home.
still, watching Mark Healy and Shane Dorian taking big waves to the next level is worth a bit of support.

Not quite sure why some would consider Clark to be an asshole. I definitely lean toward the anti side of the surf contest debate, yet the several times I have crossed paths and spoken with Jeff Clark I found him to be very affable...no attitude, pretense, or arrogance at all.
