Mollusk Surf Shop celebrates five years of being in business with the opening of Kanoa Zimmerman's latest folio of images; "Free Dive". Come-on by on Saturday at 7pm for the barbeque and stay for the music of Sudden Oak and art by Kanoa Zimmerman.
"Free Dive" is a collection of ethereal underwater shots by Zimmerman, from his recent trip to the Fijian Islands with friends and pro-surfers Mark Healy and Aamion Goodwin. Moody, dark and mysterious, the photographs explore the human interaction with the underwater marine environment.
In our current times, most deep-sea sport fishing is done through chartered party boats, where the connection between man and fish is kept apart. Kanoa Zimmerman and his subjects purposely place themselves back into the food chain, in an attempt to capture the essence of survival.
Mark Healy, Hawaiian pro-surfer explains the trip with the Zimmerman: "The islands we dove near are some of the most remote in all of Fiji. We spent weeks on end spearing fish for food, living a feral existence and exploring these specs of sand and coconut trees in the middle of the ocean. When I was on these islands, my thoughts were as clear as they've ever been, being wholly consumed with our basic day-to-day needs and the sheer beauty of the environs. You 'need' to catch enough fish to provide enough protein to get you through the day--you 'need' to keep the fire going in case the matches run out. It's a month long meditation. It's my 'reset' button."
