Man this place gets some great waves but it is a spooky place. The first time I came here I nailed my first ride, beached it, and was startled to find a headless seal rolling around in the sand next to me.
Probably totally unrelated....but as I was departing, and standing on top of the dunes, observing the surf at middle OB yesterday, I saw something large surface and then disappear back underwater about 25 yards past the lineup. It appeared to roll and make a splash. Did not appear to be a dolphin style movement. Too small to be a whale. Not a SUP! I waited ten minutes or so for it to re-surface but it never did.
@kirkle, that might have been a larger seal. I saw what looked to me like seals yesterday doing the same thing way outside.
Just be glad they're well fed in cali, and OB isn't a seal hangout. Oz is up to what, 3 fatalities for the year? damn
7 years back or so I was out here on a crap Spring morning. Small, piddly slop, no one else out, just a few beach walkers. A gray whale surfaced close by with a loud spout. I jumped a few feet off my board........ Whale kept cruising north. Cool experience overall.
Well let's hope for someone's sake, and/or everyone's safety is was a large seal, or Nessie or an illusion. Never seen any movement like that on the outside at OB in all the years I have been surfing there. I imagine @daniel is correct with his seal assessment.
I had a grey whale surface 10 feet away from me there. Not a roll, and keep moving type of surface. Its head went straight up about HH-1.5OH turned 90 deg and looked at me for a few seconds before slowly going down. At that exact moment, set of the day peaked over its head and i rode it to the beach. Would not have beieved it actually happened until I saw my buddy's face on the beach...
