Rant - Ocean Beach

There isn't another break I've surfed where there is a mellower, nicer group of people that keep an eye on each other out in the water than Ocean Beach. With fall upon us and winter around the corner I'd like to remind everyone to check your leashes, know your limits, surf with a buddy when you can, or at least close to some other surfers if possible.

Personally I've never had less issues with other people in the water and felt more stoked about surfing any break than OB when it's good, or not. Try to be polite, have fun, & do your best to be stoked. Sorry for the cheesy rant.

Be safe, be stoked. Pic from this morning.

Maybe go build a high school in Costa Rica to help be nice....I heard that helps :)

I had a very different experience there this morning, when some lunatic started spouting off a bunch of bullshit in an attempt to vibe people out of the lineup. Mellow and Nice disappears when there's a crowd on the peak.

Also, re: leashes, I put two leash strings through my plug. Might just be peace of mind, but having a back-up hasn't failed me yet!

1567 - Love it!! You are right on!
Been surfing for over 30 yrs and am 42 yrs young. I feel the same way. OB has a unique breed.
I love our neighborhood watch system and surfing is about the STOKE. Share it!

@Rick, bummer you had that experience out there. Maybe the early morning AM crew is different but for every person that made it through to the outer-bar received a welcome nod for trudging through, that combined with sunshine and people hooting just adds to the experience.

YEWWW.

Rick - I heard about some nastiness out there this morning - sounds totally shitty. Let's work together to keep the peace & good vibes going. I'll do my part.

I like the good vibes, thanks for the reminder. Not sure the two leash strings are going to help, although I guess it can't hurt. I've never broken a string, only the leash itself and once a plug pulled out. Don't most big wave guns have 2 plugs. New leash (not a comp) and solid plug without any yellowing around it are probably a good idea.

My first wave of the day someone dropped in at a critical section. Needless to say I had to straighten out and get caught inside for a few. Wave etiquette, no matter where you are. Good luck.

I think back on my OB my sessions with their cold water, fierce currents, roiling whitewater, 20 minute paddles, and deadly inner bar closeouts. Then I think about those beautiful, uncrowded peaks on the outside, and the chill people I've met, and somehow it's one of my favorite places on earth.

Not sure about the two leash strings. I would say just have a good one from this year... not 1985. Think about it. Sooner or later it is just going to pull the freakin plug out. The key is to rarely ditch your board - only when there is a 15 foot bomb ready to take you out. Makes everyone in the line up a a lot happier - especially the three guys with the really big eyes 10 feet on the inside.

yest was awesome i think most people are nicer when the waves are crazier and your all sitting there cause everyone knows the paddle was fucking hard to get out and you gotta have some balls to catch them 10ft. when i say wassp to people in the water thats how i feel you know. like "dam dude that was crazy and now im finally here lets fuck shit up!!!!" most locals have the same vibes too so that helps. and i see familiar faces all the time now
