Olympians Surf Too

2597

While the Winter Olympics typically connote sensible thoughts of fluffy snow, aerodynamic spandex, and Tonya Harding conspiracy theories, 2010’s crop of U.S. Winter Olympians has sourced a less likely association: surfing. As it turns out, nearly one third of the 85 American competitors polled confessed a healthy addiction to saltwater. And it wasn’t just the snowboarders. Ice hockey players, aerial skiers, and skeleton sliders (who reach speeds of up to 80 MPH while drafting headfirst down an icy spaghetti chute) all cited surfing as a significant component in their Olympic lifestyles.

about to hit the swooping groomed slopes of Deer Valley in about 45 minutes.

Damn.....surfing is so much better than skiiing. Cant help but think that every time I gear up for the slopes and extract hundreds of dollars from my wallet.

I was noting how clean my skier friend's car is compared to my sand filled civic. I said I think I take half the beach home with me each time, he said "Oh I take the mountain home, it just melts" +1 skiing.

Being able to sneak in a sesh before work (sans hours of driving), for pretty much free, with freaking dolphins..... +1 bazillion surfing.

-1 Skiing makes your car dirty with sand and salt that could wreak havoc
on your underbody/paint.

-1 on expensive lift tickets, gas

+100 surfing.. Free

Heading up to South Lake today.. Beats antique and Les claypool tonight!

Damn, sounds like it's gonna be a StokeReport par-tae in Tahoe this weekend. Hope the Tahoe locals don't mind me droppin' in on their slopes.... Maybe I'll do a special conditions tweet just to piss 'em off. :)

I spent last weekend skiing this secret spot called Heavenly. 4-6ft of snow, warm, no one out. Aww crap, now that I've said something it will be jammed with tourists and bears.

Those bears have a localism clique going on, so you better be careful!

Just bring a jar of honey, and you'll be fine.

If I could only do 1 sport, I would choose surfing over snowboarding in a heartbeat. But I CAN do both, and I love snowboarding, so I'm gonna stick up for it (but not skiing ;-) ):

Being warmer after 6-8 hours of playing in the snow vs 2 hours of winter surfing +1 snowboarding

Sharing an epic day on the slopes with my wife, who has no chance of sharing an epic day at OB with me +priceless snowboarding

I'm doing the backcountry splitboarding thing for the first time this weekend with @over_the_falls

@tedm315, I hear ya & am w/ya 100%. Love that I can do the Cali Duathlon... surf in the morn, hop in the car & be on the mtn in the arvo. Pretty amazing.

I wish I could snowboard. I grind heelside all the way down the mountain, then suspiciously eye the lift as though it were trying to kill me on the way back up. I need more practice, or to have learned when I was a little snowgrom.

Have fun out there @tedm315 and @over_the_falls. Have fun out there skiers.

About a year ago, after a weekend in Tahoe, I wrote a compiled a big (extremely sarcastic) list of why I like surfing better than skiing. Here it is, one year later, with a photo that I had embedded now missing but I'm too lazy to replace it. http://harakabaraka.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/skiing-and-surfing/
