I’ve heard a lot of arguments about which coast has better waves—the East or the West. And I’ve noticed people tend to talk about this subject as if there’s a quantifiable answer to the debate. They cite swell-consistency, size, prevalent weather patterns, dominant wind directions, fetch, angles of exposure, shoaling, decay, etc. And no matter which side of the country their allegiances lie, the people making these arguments seem to be incapable of seeing any validity in a counterpoint. They know they’re right. They know the other guy is wrong. They can prove it. Just listen. Just listen…

I vote Third Coast. I like it fresh.
But yes, it's not an answerable debate. The only thing we can hope to do is surf the globe, enjoy every wave we can in every spot we can, and only then hem and haw over the little differences between breaks.

I've tried both. West is best. (tho I will continue to surf and love spots on the E. side till I die)

I lived a couple of years in the east coast, and I started playing capoeira just because I wasn't able to surf...unless you hit the right spot at the right time (i.e. just after the huracane hits), you are basically deemed to surf knee high crappy closeouts. Just an impression from a small sample of beaches in the strip between OBX and NJ in a two year spam.
So, if you want to become a good capoeirista, the surf in the east coast will be the best for you!

Dont know much about bathymetry, but I gots to think W > E due to our smaller contental shelf out here. Less dissipation of energy.
Yo yo yo, check it dog on image below; major shelvage (in light blue) from north to south except around Cape Hatteras.

@KoK: not only a smaller continental shelf, but we've got the bigger ocean. The big storms have more distance and time and therefore the West Coast should get more groundswell.

...not to mention that the majority of storms propagate west to east meaning we get the brunt of the energy whereas east facing coasts only get the back side of a swell.

East coast only loses points for imitating California surf culture through re-presented images and overhyped stories. Waves are great if you know the coast...
