Opinions on a northern Indo trip late May/Early June?

Rant - Opinions on a northern Indo trip late May/Early June?

Curious if anyone has done a trip North of the Mentawais in late May/June time frame.

I'd love to hear your opinions, both positive and negative. Swells are typically bigger and there's often more wind and rain in that region at that time of year. My concern is that it gets too big, compared to the Mentawais, which is my first choice and where it's generally cleaner, a little more sheltered but still sizable. I can't find room on a boat though, so considering going north.

Any insights or opinions would be appreciated.

Cheers

@ Six@fifteen, interesting pic avatar. Where'd you get it?

you talking about Telos? well, get on a boat, land camps suck basically. find a spot. and its NEVER too big in the mentawais. usually the problem is lack of swell. you can always find a nook and cranny to score head high waves even if the swell is pumping.

No worries, just wanting credit where credit is due, and not plagiarized.

And to the bottom feeders, you can't take a joke.

Yeah, @makai, you already got your panties in a bunch about this. As I explained, we must have been at the Bo the same day...happy to send you my source file if that helps you sleep easier.

@dsx2000, thanks. It's a boat trip I'm considering, but I'm not sure exactly where they're going; could be Telos. I'm not overly worried about it getting too big. But it'd be nice to know there are some relatively mellow options up there if it is pumping...

@ Six@fifteen, and if you think you 'can' send me your source file to 'prove' that you too took the same exact picture on the same day in the same position at the same time, I'll still call you the LIAR you are.

There were no other photographers where I was when I took the pic. Thus you're a LIAR!

My suggestion, bring me your memory card, and only then will I retract the fact that you LIED.

Waiting for your "source file," while I'm LMFAO @ U!

But here's a challenge to you @ Six@fifteen; where were you positioned to take the pic, at what time did you take it, single frame or burst, lens size, hand held, tripod, or monopod?

You already have the date, but the exact specifics you cannot come up, thus my challenge to you.

One of my least tolerable characteristics in an individual is lying.

Makai, don't blow out your bypass. Seriously! The ability to continue riding waves is more important than source files. Besides isnt (alleged) imitation the sincerest form of flattery? Surf waves not hospital rooms, that's my motto. Lame as it is.

@makai, heed King of Kooks advice and try to get a grip! We don't want you to blow a gasket over this. You're clearly bent out of shape. I'd be happy to send the file to a third party for verification. Who wants the file to mediate this? My photo was shot from Cliff Ave. in the morning; probably with my 300 mil zoom lens. Jesus dude, it was probably a single frame..not a burst. But I generally don't remember my settings for two years. What do you shoot with? Post it and if my camera is different than yours, the meta data in my file will prove your paranoia. By the way, it's not very polite to accuse someone you've never met to be a liar. Channel your energy in a more healthy manner. Try to score some waves this weekend!

@ Six@fifteen, even an amateur photographer knows angles, and lighting characteristics on the subject. You need to do your homework before you lay claim again to someone else's photo(s).

All that being said, here's a simple non threatening or accusatory critique of that day:

1.) There's no downward angle to the picture, thus no to being shot from "Cliff Ave."
2.) No sun on the front of the wave, thus not "in the morning."
3.) A 300 mm lens would have created a tighter framed shot even 'if' shot up on "Cliff Ave."
4.) And as for your settings, it's on the memory card, or in your words, "source file" you claim to have.

I'm having fun with this, and by no means stressing out, only exposing someone who can't prove their claims. (sorry for the liar call, my bad).

Attached are three shot of the day in question using a Canon DSLR and a 70-200 mm f/2.8 lens. The first picture is shot up on "Cliff Drive," the second shot from only about one to two feet above water level next to the boat ramp at the end of Brighton Ave, and the third, the specific location 'my' picture was taken from.

BTW, all these pics were taken in the afternoon, after 2 P.M.

@King of Kooks, thanks ; - )

For what it's worth, after all the brewhaha that's brewing, I studied both photos very closely and they DO look identical to me. A remarkable coincidence?! Or a simple twist of fate?

Sorry for morphing off the original topic, and I hope that when six@fifteen goes to Indo he has a great time. I'll be in Hawaii "late May/June time frame."

Surf's pretty good, weather is sunny, and all is well in Nor Cal.

Verdict: Makai took the picture. Six@fifteen is too embarrassed to admit he swiped the picture. It is blatantly obvious if you look at this comparison.

You're all totally right and I'm guilty as charged! My bad @makai!

I highly doubt you'll believe me, but it was an honest mistake..here's what I think happened.

I surfed the groin that morning and took a few pics from Cliff Ave. before getting in..It's obvious they're from higher up and yes the light is different. I hadn't gone back and looked at them since this debate began...They're not great shots of the swell that day. I must have grabbed your photo from SR when emailing my weekend report to a friend on the east coast, which I'll often do...I try to point to URLs, but for whatever reason I didn't do that. Your photo got saved on my hard drive and when I needed an image for SR I grabbed it, not thinking at the time that it was someone else's image...or perhaps not even remembering. I don't know because it was a while ago.

Anyway, when you called me out on the image, all I remember was that I took photos that day too and presumed it was mine...I would never knowingly use someone else's photo and claim it was mine, despite the fact that's what it appeared I did! I shoot a lot and wouldn't do that.

So, mea culpa! I'm updating my avatar with a new image now.

peace.

Well guess what...maybe SR site/image upload code is the culprit...I just uploaded a new photo from my desktop and I got someone else's avatar!!??? King of Kooks? bizarre...

weird...my new pic is on the beginning of the thread, King of Kook's avatar image disapeared and my plagiarized image in the thread...

It used to be quite common for files with the same name, like say "Bo.jpg," to override another "Bo.jpg" like that. I'd more than once posted a photo.jpg image straight off my phone only to be like zuh? that's not the pic I took.

I hope this settles the issue for good. It's a nice pic and all, but not worth this kind of trouble.
