I was up on the cliffs and just happened to snap a crowd picture with my iphone seconds before the wave came through. It's not that clear, but you can see that the ground is already wet, and so people who were in that area had clear signs that water had been there. Since my phone was still out, I snapped a picture as the wave was coming through as well. Yikes!

looks pretty bad in that 2nd video above...from ground level. They're lucky that high scaffold with the announcers in it didnt go over. Could have been much worse.

I know this might not be the most popular of opinions, but I think the contest organizers and the local PD should close down access to all of Pillar Point. North of the point and west of the airport should be fair game, as far as I can tell, but the pillar point area is extremely exposed, as this last contest showed. Further, that small bit of bluff which people stand on is both dangerous for us and getting destroyed by 1000s of people tramping up it ever time Maverick's is breaking. I'm all for people sharing in the spectacle, Mavericks is a special place, but we have to do so safely and in a way that won't destroy the local surroundings, IMHO.
