Just a heads-up to any whose interest I have piqued with regards to bodysurfing. Early this morning I had to head to the ER for a badly throbbing foot infection, one that left me basically immobile. It was drained and was totally gross and I'm off my feet for a few days. The conclusion me and the doc came to is that it was from my fins, which feel pretty damn comfortable but must have nicked me and, left untreated, turned into a bad infection. I am now going to more closely read that rant about ridiculous surf accessories to see if there's some good socks I can wear under my fins, and I send a wind of caution to you all if you're gonna strap on the swim fins like I've been urging for months.
The upside to this downside is that my ER doc was hot, so it wasn't entirely unpleasant.

So I did a search for "foot infection" thinking that it would be fun to post an image of your affliction. Really bad idea. That google image search nearly made me toss my breakfast. Really sorry to hear about your funky foot, but glad that you had a hot ER doc. :)

I'm sure you'll be able to find something to protect your feet. Diabetics like to snorkel, scuba, and body surf and foot protection is very important. My dad has diabetes and recently got into kayaking so I've been researching water shoe options for him quite a bit.

I wear split toe booties. No straps just a solid sole. Then I got a size bigger fins. Works great, protects the feet on the walk and keeps them warm in the water. Wise also sells a neoprene sock.

When I go bodysuring I wear O'Neil fin socks and use Viper fins that have neoprene glued into the foot pocket. A more flexible fin may help as well. Viper has a couple of models of varying length and flexibility. I've never had a problem but understand your pain. When I used to bodyboard as a kid I would get nasty sores on my feet that would take forever to heal because I could never stand staying out of the water too long.

Hot ER docs are the bee's knees. Hot EMTs are even better. Back in 2008 I had two 20-somethings snip off my bike shorts in the back of an ambulance. If I hadn't been so concussed at the time, I probably would have proposed to one of 'em
