Rallies at beaches in Marin and around the country protest offshore oil drilling

1543

More than 150 people linked hands facing the ocean at Stinson Beach at noon Saturday to demonstrate their opposition to offshore oil drilling.

More than 800 similar events were scheduled to take place simultaneously in all 50 states and 34 countries around the world - including at ###### in Sausalito.

Andrea Freeman of Woodacre, who organized the Stinson Beach event, said, "What's happening now on our planet is of critical importance. We're at a tipping point. The BP oil disaster in the gulf is a crude awakening, a crude wake-up call. If we don't end our addiction to oil and shift to clean energy, we aren't going to survive as a species."

The rallies got started in Florida when Dave Rauschkolb, a surfing enthusiast, began staging similar demonstrations to protest plans to lift bans on offshore oil drilling in Florida's waters.

Sure would have been nice to have been made aware of this event so that us surfers could have joined in too.

Most people that protest off shore Oil drilling used and or burned Gas and Oil to get to the beach and protest and then to get home after. That's because we need it.
I thought the bans they want to lift were so they could drill in shallow water like they wanted to do all along. That way much safer and easy to work on if problems happen. Don't we have this problem because of protests (ban's) that made them drill out in deep water in the 1st place? Be careful what you wish or protest for. If they were in shallow water like they wanted to be, maybe just maybe we wouldn't be here in the 1st place.
What a mess.

offshore drilling is in no way shape or form good and only prolongs the pathetic energy policies that have been in place before disco was popular. we need to use this spill to drastically reform our nation's dependence on fossil fuels because we see the consequences of corporate negligence and lack of morality. if necessity breeds innovation, we are most certainly there.

to those that say we need it, you've been sold a lie by your politicians and ad campaigns from the energy companies. the technology is here and available.(this is coming from someone who pays less than $5 a month for energy)

obviously there are somethings you can't get around like a car but you can make an impact on your consumption. don't mistake this for a holier than thou post that most definitely is not my intent. just trying to raise awareness that no we don't need offshore drilling and yes there is technology to lessen dependence on fossil fuels.

Screw the bike, lets just go back to horse and wagon, have to draw a line at using whale oil to light the streets though.

What about a penny farthing? That's retro enough, isn't it?

I am trying to remember where I read the hilarious story about NYC's manure issues before autos... There were something like 25 deaths a year just due to piles of horse manure falling on people... ok so that part was not the hilarious part... but the descriptions were crazy funny!

no horses!
