Repair fest (kind of like a linux install fest, but not that nerdy at all :) )

Rant - Repair fest (kind of like a linux install fest, but not that nerdy at all :) )

Hey anyone want to start / organize a repair fest?
I've had a few casualties this season here, lemme list them:
1) San Andreas fault line across the stringer on my 6'6 cult bullet due to ###### Cookie Monster inner bar
2) Rock chomp, puncture, and scrape at spot X
3) Mystery San Andreas fault line across the 6'2 piranha (am I that fat?)

I've fixed the boards, with a repair kit for $20 from aqua, but they look kind of yucky. I'm sure I could have done better, so maybe we can get someone who does their own repairs and does them well hold the torch? I think I can do better, but I have to use plastic to flatten the resin, or something, to make it smoother. I just knock it off with sand paper, but it's still kind of bumpy. Who wants to lead? Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime!

I think the phrase you are looking for is: "Teach a man to repair a fish...."

I would like to learn to repair dings and bangups. I have the 6'8 to practice on. I wouldn't mind angrily sanding it after it took a bite out of my leg. Maybe it will be less cranky after I patch up the years of unresolved dings my friend put in it before passing it on to me.

i don't really know y'all but i have this pesky delam on my longboard that i routinely stuff with wax...kept it pretty water tight but looks so ghetto. i'm definitely interested in a ding repair party. i would not be the one to hold the torch though...

My longboard is no longer watertight in the front due to a couple of scratches. I wouldn't even give them the honor of being called "dings" but, alas, they are certainly affecting my surfing.

Yeah I'm down.

If it's going to be anything like the last Linux install party I went to (DON'T JUDGE), we need movies and pizza. Preferably surf movies, however, instead of "Revolution OS". I can only watch Bruce Perens so many times.

Maybe y'all should hold a first aid class while you're at it. Check out vegansurfer's pic, close up.

Still smiling. Awesome.

I used to repair the family boat growing up and so can do some decent fiberglass work (I am outta practice) when necessary...
I also surf a Stewart EPS board and have done a couple of not so great emergency repairs that I never seem to get back to cleaning up..

So I'd be in for a "fix-it" session...

Ahh the smell of resin in the morning
smells like........

Actually, a first aid class might not be a terrible idea. I've been patching myself up with a backpacking first aid kit and the "I'll pick up an icepack on the way home" method. What I learned sitting in on my brother's boy scout meetings has gotten pretty rusty.

There are a few wilderness first aid classes out there, haven't found any in a basic google search for ocean/surf specific first aid.
If anyone's interested, let me know.

cyclona23 insisted on taking a picture of me before driving me to the hospital to get stitched up. we were a bit south of ###### (now "stitches") and stopped at the safeway for frozen peas on the way out. i'm actually a wilderness EMT (soon to be paramedic) so i can lend some first aid knowledge. there's a chapter on ocean first aid in the books but it's mostly related to diving. i'll post some info soon.

re: ding repair. we should track down an electric sander... anyone got one?

ouch! what happened? Do you think they did a good job stitching? Faces are important.

I had a wicked wipeout this morning. Unexpected, thought I was making the wave, no problem, so no preparation or bailing. Totally cartwheeled backwards, whiplash, brain sloshing around inside skull. Dang. Otherwise super fun session with @crypto, @sticker, and @H20manslibrary. sorry for the hacking of name spelling.

I still do not understand the @ part. What does that mean again?.

yeah, i think they did a good job--the hardest part is keeping the sun off the scar so it doesn't get super dark. i pearled on a closeout on my long board, which hit me in the face at some point in the wash cycle. they said they could glue it but that i'd have to keep it dry for 10 days, to which i said "oh hell no i'm surfing tomorrow stitch me up!"

Great idea @crypto. I'm game for repair and/or 1st aid sessions. I have a small elec. hand sander. I have a few bigger dings than my usual a+b epoxy putty won't handle.

30 stitches left! I drove @SFGoofyGal in for stitches from a wipeout from the same spot. She managed to put her teeth through her lip. I'd post pictures but then I'd probably need stitches.

We've been calling that spot "30 stitches left" since.

The @ thing is a twitter reference. It's how you signify someone's @name. Many of the stoke report folks post their reports here via twitter using the location code.. for instance, you'll see that @Greacen posted "smlm" (San Mateo, Linda Mar) to his twitter account and Stoke Report sees the code and posts that tweet up here as a report.

@tcannon -- that's crazy that you already called that place "30 stitches left". it does pitch like a mofo sometimes. we always call it stitches now.

well, after a relatively healthy crew, guess who just bought an injured fish.
5'10 twin keel added to my motley crue, but yeah...it was relatively cheap for a reason....it needs surgery. Some not so minor delam going on :(
Two methods can be employed:
1) turkey baster squirt resin all up in there
2) peel back and layer and do over (the hard way)

Thinking of going with option 2.
@vegansurfer we're delam sufferers now :(

stuff it with wax! in the cold water it's basically the same as actually fixing it... ;)
but seriously, i'd love to make this happen.
