breaking news: it helps to be in shape if you wanna surf. you'd never guess, but it's a full-body workout!

it's stuff like this that gives the Times is On It twitter reason to exist.

To the casual spectator, surfing seems to involve primarily balance, grace, nervy insouciance and a certain laid-back, ineffable oneness with the powers of the deep. But a series of newly published studies of the actual physical demands of surfing reveal that other, sometimes surprising aspects of fitness may be as important to surfing success as the ability to judge and remain upright on a swell.

8% of a 2 hour session = 9.6 minutes of wave riding time. Did these guys paddle out at Raglan?

Every time someone asks me about learning to surf, I ask them "are you a good swimmer?". 9 out of 10 people say no.

50% of surfing is paddling and 50% of surfing is waiting. The rest of the time you surf.
But seriously, 8% of the time was surfing? I guess that's because these were pros in a heat with only three other dudes out. Try getting 8% at the Lane.
I figured out that 8% of one hour is 288 seconds. How many seconds is the average wave here at OB? Five seconds seems like a fairly generous average. Ten seconds seems like on the high side. Twenty or thirty seconds - only if you're riding the white water in to the beach. So let's ballpark an average ride at seven seconds, if the conditions are favorable. That would come out to 41 waves in a one hour session.
Anyone here ever get 41 waves in a one hour period?

Good calling them out on the math.. Nearly one ride per minute... That's friggin hilarious. Maybe it's possible on a SUP with zero crowd and riding every ripple that rolls through.
