Rant - San Francisco "The Others" - I just don't get it

These spots aren't that good and I just don't get it. I'm not trying to stir up crap here, just explore and understand what the hell is going on. Why do people care so much about these spots? Why do they get so bent out of shape at anyone else even thinking about surfing Their Precious?

San Francisco - Other
This has got to be one of the most uninspiring waves I've ever seen. One drop and it goes flat under you. It's worse than Pacifica. Fighting currents the whole time. Dealing with the crowd. Ugh. More often than not I pull up here and even though it's "breaking" I can't bring myself to suit up and surf that lameness. I think the guys out there are only narcissists basking in the admiration of tourists. Granted there are a few times per year when it goes off but for the most part I'd rather go home and examine my vagina with a hand mirror than surf this spot.

San Francisco - Other Other
Oh my god do you really want to paddle 3 miles to get to this wave? Next time I am bringing my oarboard to get out there or maybe a zodiac. The wave itself is not bad but there's a super tight takeoff zone and a bunch of weirdos in the water. A couple of sessions per year there is enough for me.

I know what you're going to say - "You're right these spots do suck so don't ever surf there!!! - (and oh what a wit you are!) but I wonder what would make anybody so hot and bothered about them. I surf them for the occasional novelty and variety but even if I lived right there I think I'd usually drive somewhere else. I couldn't imagine building my life around them.

Let it go. This battle is tireless. It's also growing quite boring. People have different opinions. This entire issue was just dealt with in the "controversial post removed" thread. It's been debated countless times before here. Does it really need rehashing? Even asking for an explanation simply refuels the argument. Do you want people to tell you that they're actually quality spots? That'd only make matters worse. Like you said, you don't like em', don't surf em'.

I agree that these spots suck for the most part, but also agree that we should drop it.

Here's a clue: this has nothing to do with whether or not a spot is "secret" or "sensitive". It has much to do with there being a fairly hardcore contingent of dedicated locals who believe that, at the least, people should discover surf spots through exploration and word of mouth, and not by looking things up on the internet. Yes, you can call them luddites or whatever if you want. But the fact is they see things differently and they're not going to relent just because you or anyone else waves an iPhone in front of their face and says "deal with it buddy, the world's changed!" To the contrary, they're waving one finger back at you saying "the hell it has, I'm still breathing, mofo!"

A fair number of them also don't give two shits about whether or not they're "in public" when surfing and if they wanted their pictures taken, they'd get a friend to stand on the beach / rocks and do it, and they wouldn't have to hide 100 yards away with a telephoto lens producing mediocre snapshots with a compressed depth of field and poor subject focus. Lastly, most of 'em consider posting pictures of said spots online within hours or a day of the spot firing, when it only fires occasionally and under specific conditions, to be very poor impulse control on the part of the author. There's a common feeling among these people and it says "put those pictures on your wall at home, don't blast them out to the entire world on the internet". And: "don't SMS reports from the beach, just suit up and go surf and write it up later". Etc. Etc.

Please note: this isn't advocacy. Just trying to explain what you're dealing with, since you "don't get it".

Every year. Somebody just has to bring this up. Every single year. And look how popular the topic is, even though everyone is saying let it go, those places suck, etc. If they suck so much, then why is this happening? And how many more topics are going to be created to pointlessly continue this discussion?

@nalu: I think you just continued the discussion ;)

suggestion: if you don't like it, vote it down. i just did.

Unfortunately other people are voting it up so this topic will not go away. That's what I mean.
