Fantastic pictorial and story. But shouldn't you SR WHINERS be voting this down because of the ONE shot of the GGB and FP?!

What would "location turtle do do do?" LMFAO!!!

Wait for it, here it comes.

Fun! I liked it except for that I wish there had been more shots of actual surf. All the posing was cool at first and then started to seem a little vain. But what the hell. Overall a great blog post. Yeah, and I love the addition of the "secret spot" in Santa Cruz. Hey, can you call a spot secret if every time it's decent there are thirty pickup trucks and station wagons parked on the road?

those spots with tons of SUVs and pickups along highway 1 have always been popular (last 10 years and counting), just no need to advertise them, it would be one thing if major contests were held there, but then again we all know there is some decent surf N or SCC-SMC-SFC so f### it right? first come first served. nothing sacred anymore.

when I was a UCSC student in the 80's I'd bike down 1 (I was a racer then.. and half the man literally I am now) and see these random places with pickups parked in groups hidden from the casual drive-by... I love those spots now! And I must be entitled right? After all I knew about them when Stevie-Wonder, Karo, Doc, Mueller, Harley, and Ben (locals born and bred to a man) were ripping it up... before some of you weren't even out of the 6th grade...

What a load...

don't hate...... surf!
stay stoked!

and the sacred is where you find it, make it, or notice it...
not in some "rule" (not withstanding the Benedictines)
that last one was a religious/theological/liturgical joke.. sorry occupational hazard

That was probably my pick-up truck you saw. Stopped surfing there the day my buddy was bumped by a great white. The flat rock reefs near Davenport are well known sea lion haul outs. Further north, New Year's island is famous for elephant seal. Just last week I read that a kayaker's boat was munched at Pigeon Pt. Great whites love pinniped meat and hang out near rookeries. In almost 30 years of surfing these local waters, I've seen 4 "great white-sized" sharks during a surf, and all of them were in either SM or SC county. Only confirmed shark species I've seen at OB are leopards and salmons. I prefer a 15 foot wave pounding on my head much more than going face to face with a 15 foot fish.

Knost is probably one of the best and innovative long boarders at the moment.......but 58 pics and only 5 contain actual surfing....... this pictorial seems better suited for vanity fair

Actually, if you read that blog regularly, its mostly lifestyle pics and not much surfing. The article is in keeping with the bloggers style. I've never been a fan of localism - live and let surf. Unless you were born into a family who owned "private" beachfront property, you are no more deserving than the next guy. Yes it sucks when out of towners and kooks jack the lineup - but that's life. Be thankful you live someplace close to waves and have the money to own a board. Treat other's with respect and you'll earn the same.

I'm with danimal - sure you can drive, hike and find uncrowded surf - and risk life and limb with the landlord. Many great spots closer to me, with less threat to my life, than those "secret" spots on HWY 1.
