Sand at second lot, they didn't do that. had a couple big parties that raised hella money from our community. where did that go? I heard they got kicked out of there last location. I'm scratching my head wondering.

I sure hope it is and I'm sure it is, but I guess you never know. I just donated some $$ to them.

Kazual may be onto something! I see no 2011 returns on http://www.savethewaves.org/financial
Executive director makes 72 big ones for a non-profit! :D Not unheard of....but I'd rather not hear it tbh.
If my tax math is right and I read the return right...I glossed over it really.... I think they had ~350K in income and he makes ~70K, that's 20% of every dollar. Again maybe I read the return wrong...got work to do, just glossed over it.

oooh he's taking loans too! Maybe Save the waves will forgive them!?!

I think I accidentally donated to "Shave the Waves". Which explains this photo I got in the mail from them.

I read the loan going TO the organization. Looks like the ED is one of us!

5,4,3,2,1...someone start a rant about he isn't local enough...

sticker

Yeah, the ED & one of the other directors is loaning the $ *to* the org. And $72K/year for a full time ED feels pretty market to me, depending on the guy's experience level & skill set.

That Shave the Waves guy could wear a 3/2 here no problem.

All, happy to talk to anyone who's interested about what Save The Waves does, our accomplishments over the past several years, and more. If there are open questions then perhaps we're not doing a good enough job communicating results. A good place to start though would be our website savethewaves.org, you might be surprised how many projects and campaigns we're involved in around the world. Because we do a lot of international work so you may not see everything here locally. That said, we launched and have been working on the Save Slooat (sic) campaign for several years, and stopped the City from continuing to trash OB with continued rock and debris. And the sand they're currently placing at south Slooat (sic) is a direct result of pressure we and Surfrider SF and other community members have put on the City. We also greatly influenced the OB Master Plan that just came out, so the City and others deal with problems like erosion in a more sensible way long-term. Again, happy to talk directly, you can reach me at 831-426-6169 / dean@savethewaves.org. -Dean

About that sand, could one really big bad swell/tide take it all away overnight this winter? I guess sand should be the best option though still, simply because that's what was there to begin with?

Wave Hugger

On moving the sand to Slooat (misspelling on purpose because this forum for some reason X's out a specifically name a surf spot, odd), it's a band aid approach that should only be part of an overall solution, but it's worth trying. The challenge with sand and sand nourishing is yes, a big swell can come in and take a lot of the sand away, as well as a lot of bluff for that matter. Even tide and current alone can move a lot of sand. So generally to be successful with sand nourishing you need to keep doing it consistently, which is expensive and disruptive. A better way to do it in this case would be to nourish with sand that they dredge every year from the shipping channel at the mouth of the Bay. We've been pushing for them to retrofit the barge that they use for this with a special pump that would allow them to pump sand from the barge out in the water directly onto the areas on the beach and bluff that need it. This again though isn't going to totally solve the problem. What they really need to do is relocate the infrastructure they've placed too close to the beach there, move everything back, remove the rubble and then restore with some type of vegetated dune system that will do much better over time in slowing erosion: http://www.savethewaves.org/save-slooat (spell "slooat" with only one "o")

Wow, I like the sound of that best case scenario. Thanks for explaining.

Charity Navigator does not evaluate 501(c) organizations. But, for your other contributions you can research the group here before handing over your dollars http://www.charitynavigator.org/?gclid=CMOgmcTjn7ICFQjf4Aodq2QA0w

or better yet, turn your hat sideways then go sniff around the point (Hunters) till you find some hood homies. You can tell them you're in a real gang too...a surf gang...then remove your finger and sniff that.

Can't believe I'm in agreement with the fat, ugly hateful ignorant caveman chris wilson. Save The Waves is a fraud. Notice Dean's accomplishments he just listed, they didn't do any of that themselves, Surfrider did most of the work. Save The Waves does nothing except steal money and then put cute labels on surf locations to create the perception that said locations are suddenly protected. Just because a surf location is labeled a World Surfing Reserve doesn't mean that place is suddenly safe from local destruction. If you're going to donate to a charity donate to Surfrider.

actually reports are coming in to me from other sources that shady things are going down with this organization. false use of funding for personal enjoyment, ect. has anyone else heard anything?

piss_shiver

Here's some conspiracy scenario fodder for you Mr Wilson:
Choose a venue, like something your buddy owns in Hunters Point. He charges 30K for the venue per night. The non profit takes in 60K from door sales and silent auctions and crap like that. Non profit nets in 30K, but spent 30K to your friend. BEWARE of nepotism Mr Wilson, BEWARE. It's entirely plausible.

Wave Hugger

I'm not going to get in a back and forth in a rant forum, but to be clear, there is absolutely nothing shady about STW - $.90 of every dollar goes directly to program work, staff (of which there are only 3 that are paid) works their asses off, and if anything as a smaller org we stretch supporter dollars a lot further than larger orgs. And as far as saying Surfrider did most of the work on Slooat, it's simply not true. I know because we launched the campaign, I live at OB, and I personally spent hundreds of hours campaigning on the issue over the past two years, as did our enviro director. Surfrider SF did too, we invited them to partner with us on it, almost all of our work involves working alongside other orgs. We love Surfrider, work with them all the time, in fact their environmental director is on our board of directors. Their budget is also over 20 times ours, and staff and volunteer-wise they're hundreds of times larger than us, so it's not surprising to hear things like this-they cast a big shadow. STW's biggest challenge - and weakness - is limited resources and capacity, plain and simple, not passion, hard work, or global impact with a tiny budget.

Chris, if you'd be willing to share with me the sources for where you're hearing anything to the contrary, please email me at dean@savethewaves.org, I'd love contact them to hopefully set the record straight. We're a transparent org and take that type of misleading info very seriously. -Dean

Facts. Show me the facts, the sources. The evidence. The smoking gun. Milton and Wilson... And why isnt save the waves showing us the books? Shouldn't non profits be transparent financially? These things shouldnt be up for debate. Why arent the financials readily accessible?

****STOKE REPORT BREAKING NEWS****
The smoking gun is real. i am so happy that truth is coming to the head of the table. the only problem is i have to raise $200 to get the actual facts. does anyone know how to make one of those kickstarter campaigns?
