Y'know, when we were out there w/Scratchy, I was definitely thinking it was odd that a baby whale was all by its lonesome & that the dolphin were circling it/"playing" with it. Glad neither I or @crypto did actually try to pet it (I admit to also wanting to go play with it) b/c now I'm sure we'd feel *really* guilty that maybe we had something to do with it. But, as it is & for future reference, should we call someone if we see something like that again (i.e., a baby whale by itself really close to shore)? If so, who should we call? Or is this just Darwin proving his thesis, and we should let nature do her job?

I mountain biked across the high Andes 12 years ago w/ a friend. We saw a baby alpaca w/ no mother. I told my friend that there had to be a predator around. He pooh pooh'd the notion and sure enough, that night we were visited by a puma.
Before that swimming group went into the water a few years ago @ Solana Beach, they saw a baby seal cowering up against the cliff. They went in and the one guy got hit by the Great White and bled out. I'm gonna guess the baby seal was behaving that way because mom had just become part of the food chain by the same Whitey.
As for Scratchy: if he was a baby and wasn't weaned yet and something happened to mom . . . no milk. Poor Scratchy!
@sticker: I don't think there's really anyone for you to call. AFAIK, no one's ever tried raising a baby grey by bottle feeding.
Caveat: I try to take what little I know of these fascinating situations and apply some logic. It's just speculation, nothing more. I'm no expert.

I think crypto has something important on his to-do list.
"I wanted to go over and pet it and scratch it. I heard whales like that. I should have, but just left it to its own devices and then it left with the escorts. I hope other people down the beach got a chance to see Scratchy.
If I ever see you again Scratchy I'll fulfill my promise. I'll go over and give you a good scratch. :)"

Well shoot, now I'm bummed about scratchy.

@duckdive: Upon further reflection, I have to agree. The most likely explanation for Scratchy's demise is: IT'S CRYPTO'S FAULT!

@sticker: I'm wrong (as usual). Sea World has rescued a baby gray before, milk feeding it and weaning it before releasing it. Google "JJ gray whale" if you're interested. Anyways, next time give Sea World a call before letting Crypto kill the poor whale.
BTW, have I ever told all of you that I'm a Dumbass? Well, I'm telling you now. I'm a Dumbass.

Well, Kooktastic, half the battle is admitting you're wrong. The other half the battle is admitting you're a dumbass. :)
If you're not too Darwinistic, I think the Marine Resource Animal Center or some such is usually called when you find an injured seal or oil-covered bird (from the Cosco Busan days).

Best thread ever.
Also, put this number in your phone: Marine Mammal Center (415) 289-7325
They're the ones to call.

Killer whales will hunt dolphins and here's a video of dolphins attacking a baby pilot whale
Could those dolphins have fooled us? Were they really trying to hurt Scratchy?

Lee, are you implying that the dolphins we saw raped Scratchy?
(actually, we both thought that the dolphins were mating or something that morning...there was definitely something strange going on.)

that seems a bit of a stretch to think that dolphins would try to have sex with a 20 foot gray whale, but who would've thought they'd try to have sex with a pilot whale? (per lee's video)
The next time this happens, I propose sending Crypto out to be banged by the dolphins while someone else calls Sea World.
