Sea Shephard steps up its fight against Japanese whaling ships - with lasers.

The Sea Shepherd folks got hold of the EarthRace trimaran and a big laser to mess with the Japanese whaling fleet. Looks like we're finally in the 21st century.

Maybe I am an idiot... how does this harm the whaling fleet?

IMO, Sea Shepherd has their heart in the right place, but they're going about it all wrong if they really want to stop the whaling.

The way to get them to stop, of course, is to make whaling a money losing enterprise. The little pinprick attacks that they excecute simply won't accomplish that.

They need to find a deep pockets benefactor that will fund either buying or developing military grade, non-lethal weapons that destroy the fleet's logistics equipment. They need to have 3 or 4 layers of the weapons so that when one season is ruined for the whalers, they can't simply take countermeasures and continue the next year. The Sea Shepherders need to be able to stop them cold for several years in a row.

If they can accomplish that, only then will the whalers stop. Unfortunately the Shepherders are completely amateur strategists and technologists. They're going at this with pure emotion rather than outthinking their opponent. Stopping the whalers is going to take someone with a little less heart and impulsiveness and a lot more brains and patience.

Sea Shepherd is in the business of media manipulation, not actually truly interrupting or harming the whaling fleet. It's all for good video. These stand-offs make great media events, giving more to their cause than any disruption of whaling. This latest video steps it up a notch for sure.

WTF? If they're trying to blind the crew on the Jap boat, that is f-ed up. This is some convoluted Batman fantasy, and the victims happen to be whalers. Like Kooktastik says, hit them where it count$$$. Unfortunately in Japan, the government still serves whale meat at school lunches in certain prefectures. Westerners getting through to the Japanese government is impossible. You basically have to find some Japanese sympathizers to help run a shame campaign on the Japanese public into realizing that decimating the whale population really is bad. Shame works well in Japan.
