Off-season DIY alaia project? Anyone?

Rant - Off-season DIY alaia project? Anyone?

Okay so the surf is going to be blowed for a while. I've been thinking I'll occupy myself with making an alaia just for fun. And no I don't mean I'm going to spend lots of money to take a class to make a super-bitchen alaia. I mean I'm going to try to figure out what kind of cheap, relatively easily available wood I can get away with using (not pine, apparently, but I'm not sure I'm going to spring for a paulownia blank either), I'm going to draw a template, and I'm gonna get a little hand planer and just goof around. See what works. Then apply linseed oil.

Low environmental impact. Creative goofing off. Anybody else wanna try?

Here are some relatively useful links that I've been perusing:

I'm in.

I have a Paulownia blank ready and waiting as well as a shaping setup in my garage (stand, hand planes, etc.), so if you want to shape side by side send me a DM on Twitter @felixdesroches :)

Rad. Okay, I'm thinking I'm going to try to do some kind of recycled wood blank, which I'll try to get together this weekend. I'll drop you a line when I'm ready to go, which hopefully won't take too long.
