Bob Wise looks from the expansive upstairs window of his surf shop at some "mushy, sloppy" waves along the 3-mile stretch of Ocean Beach. The 63-year-old San Francisco native knew the wind-and- sand-swept area when it was Playland-at-the-Beach.
Now the longtime surfboard seller will have a front-row seat to the biggest surf contest to ever hit San Francisco. Starting Nov. 1, Rip Curl will bring the world's top 35 surfers to compete in the icy, churning waters of Ocean Beach.
Q: It used to be that you wouldn't say you "surf Ocean Beach." You'd say you "surf Sl0at" or "surf Tarava1" or one of the streets ending at the beach. Now people say they "surf OB," right?
A: (Laughs.) No way did we used to call it OB or Ocean Beach. If someone called it OB, I'd say, "That's a feminine hygiene product!" I just call it the beach.
