Sharks discovered entering Bay

626

Brian Monroe was surfing in choppy conditions off Ocean Beach during low tide on a recent cloudy afternoon when the ominous figure of a ferocious predator broke the water’s surface.

Experts say a 2-foot dorsal fin that emerged less than 100 yards away belonged to a great white shark.
“I turned right towards shore and calmly paddled in,” Monroe said. “I didn’t want to draw attention to myself.”

Encounters with the large marine creatures are common off California’s beaches, where they are frequently spotted, but researchers have discovered that they venture under the Golden Gate Bridge and into San Francisco Bay.

A couple of years back I was inside the bay up on the cliffs east of Ft. Baker between Ft Baker and Sausalito and saw a shark attacking a seal. What caught my attention first was a bunch of seaguls swarming and feeding on something about 50 yards from shore, then all of the sudden a shark violently breaks the surface with the seal in its jaws and slams back down. This happened two more times. Although I didn't get a clear view of the shark it definitely had some size and I'm pretty sure it was a great white. So yes, they do venture into the bay.

If you're surfing and see a bunch of seagulls swarming and swooping into the water nearby, it's generally a good idea to paddle the other direction. It's either a carcass floating around or a school of fish. Either way, the landlord is likely around.

@Dog I gotta be honest, I have always wanted to see a shark attack a seal. Call it a morbid obsession with what I fear, but watching it must have been a pretty intense experience.

Proof!
