So this may seem like a funny question, but I've never really skated before and I live on GG park. Seems like the perfect place to learn. I consider myself a competent surfer but far away from where I want to be and just curious if anyone feels like their skating skills help in the water. I'm also realistic that I'm not getting any younger and injuries are taking longer and longer to heal these days :)
Should I get into longboard skateboarding?

I'm trying to learn. Never skated as a kid (tends to happen when you live in a place with no sidewalks) so there's a major awkwardness factor. I'm totally embarrassed, but it is fun. I have a helmet, wrist guards, knee pads....and I'm 28 so I feel like a big dork.
I'm slowly but surely getting there, and I'm definitely afraid of the ground, of hills, of going fast, of everything but it is fun.
I recommend wearing all the safety gear, finding a flat spot to start out on, and having a really good sense of humor. Having a friend who can teach you would also be a big plus.

@kootzy: that's very entertaining to watch, but it also seems incredibly dangerous since there are driveways on the road and the skateboarders have no brakes. Those dudes have balls. and no brains.
Re: the original post. Check this out. These were developed by Brad Gerlach and his dad, specifically to help out w/ surf technique.
