NOAA Officials attempt to "educate" big wave surfers on the ban against the life saving vehicles that assist the surfers. The vehicles are supposed to represent a "threat to wildlife", even though other craft with the same engines are not banned.

"My heads on a different plane right now, stop talking to me" "you're a mind virus, stop talking to me.". Funny.
I was at Other ###### grocery store this weekend to see if they had something for clogged water in my ear. They did, and told me "small children and surfers get water clogged in their ear, moms and surfers love these garlic ear drops over here just for that..."
Surfers and small children have a lot in common I think. Communication skills too it would seem??
Good thing these guys didn't have any taser guns, Skin Dog would have been shot like the guy walking his dog in Montara.
I'm siding with Skin Dog on this, because these guys know the rules and need not be continuously "educated." However, seems the guy from NOAA might have been a newbie just doing what he was told to do that day.
Yes, and for the record, I would rather see the life of a surfer saved at Mavericks than wildlife considered a few times a year
However a question remains, with the Hawaiian ecosystem being as delicate as it is, why no ban there?
I've lived in the Islands, and am very well educated on the facts that most of the indigenous species of plant, animal, and sea life are almost extinct. Especially the natural coral reefs.
I've considered myself an environmentalist, but this is just one case where I strongly feel they need to put humans first. People are going to surf here without a jet-ski and more could die. Mavericks is a special case. Not black and white.
I think he was right on the money. the producers of the film are willing to pay the ransom that the bureaucrats from the NOAA are holding over these guys. They know their lives are worth more than what amounts to a weak environmental case. All the great things the NOAA could be doing. But no they decide to pay two lackeys to come and "educate" them? That's my tax dollars wasted and educators are given a bad name. Maybe skin dog is a bit on the ego end but he told the right people to beat it.
Skin Dog was obviously taking his frustrations out on the wrong people... almost felt sorry for the NOAA guys, not an assignment I would like...
It tells you something about how far this all has come... Jeff Clark didnt need a ski for all those years, hell he didnt even need a witness... now guys are pushing the limits to the point they feel like they need the ski for safety. Who is NOAA to argue against that? I could see if they are buzzing around there daily, but lets be real, we are talking about a handful of days per year here... and Ive got to believe the sea-life is running for cover most of those days.
@brah, agree NOAA is wasting our resources here... lets build some artificial reefs
so many great lines
"stop talking to me!"
"i want my jetski"
"stop talking, just stop talking"
"mind virus!!"
"just stop talking!"
"were gonna accomplish the movie, were gonna accomplish catching big waves"
"your derailing my operation!! what are you doing? derailing...derailing"
i agree @brody not to kill the messenger i wouldn't want to have their job either. but then again if i was told to do that i'd conscientiously object.
I need education. Are there marine mammals that have been hit by a jet ski out there ever, or is it make believe?
The alpha male crap was exactly that, bullshit. Let's make trucker hats that say "MIND VIRUS" and "STOP TALKING"
:D
This whole clip reminds me of South Park, when they were break dancing, and getting 'served'.
Skin Dog, just another generic, garden variety ego maniacal Santa Cruzan creep. He should just come right out and say it, "I am a big wave surfer and I am awesome. Don't you get that, little NOAA peon toady?" Big waves were surfed for decades without jet skiis, and I'm okay with that. Sea life get hit all the time by any number of marine craft, that is not a new revelation. But Skinny feels his needs are more important, spectacular even, and should trump a stupid law. PLEASE, Skinny, spare us with your, "If I die out there it will be on you" jive. For a big wave surf dude you sound more like a melodramatic drama queen.
@nyckomondor "stop talking, just stop talking"
@sharkturd "stop talking, just stop talking"
I think it was the trucker hat salesman and GMAC yesterday at head high OB on his PWC, disregarding the plover moratorium.
Sharkturd, just another generic, garden variety ego maniacal stoke reporter. It must make you feel big to talk shit on a big wave surfing legend that you've never met. If he's so "garden variety," then why does he charge bigger waves than almost anyone in the world? C'mon man, quit trollin
Once again corporations over people....Threat to wildlife.....what a joke. If they are really concerned they should be picking up trash and halting erosion. Pollution is the biggest threat to wildlife and specifically erosion is the number one killer of salmon. I'm happy he stood up! Keep riding.
@niceguy, the way skindog treated that NOAA guy was atrocious. He showed no class whatsoever. The fact that he rides bigger waves than me matters little. And BTW, you show little class, and credibility too, since you do the same thing you accuse me of, ie "talk sh-- on people they don't know." IF you weren't so blinded by the reach-around from Skindog, you might've been able to see that. Read the bumper sticker: "my El Capitan free-climbing hero can kick your PWC assisted big wave surfer hero's ass."
@Rocco...huh? Wait, I get it, stop pollution, ride a PWC. The reasoning in this thread is getting very twisted.
@sharkturd, "atrocious?" really? An atrocity? I thought the NOAA guy condescending the surfers, saying he was "educating" them was closer to an atrocity, but I still wouldn't use that word. Come on. He verbally fucked with him and made him leave. Furthermore, I'm surprised that as a surfer you don't respect those who are at the forefront of big wave charging. You'd rather stick up for the NOAA douche bag? It seems to me you've been yelled at in santa cruz by some locals and now you're bitter. Get over it. Skindog is a quirky individual, but he's really talented and brave. Plus, the PWCs are the least of our coastal environment's worries, especially since they only are needed during massive swells.
i love the sense of entitlement among surfers. pwc's aren't allowed for valid environmental reasons, but these blowhards think it is their right to use them because they are surfing. want a better way to make sure you don't die? how about don't surf mavericks.
every time is see ballast dumped on OB or a single hulled tanker rolls by or a spill happens in the bay or sewage dumps out or they have to monthly clear out all the dead marine life from the pipes at san onofre and diablo canyon it makes me laugh that the pwc. nazis trip on mavericks. these educators from the noaa. they are ineffective, poorly prioritized bureaucrats who bully the wrong people. what are they doing? why don't they go bug mega nurseries or oil refineries? These educators knew where they were going and who to talk to. its not like people go ride pwcs around half-moon bay that often. Only when there is a big swell. they're like paparazzi for the govt.
Good thing he didn't have a Pomeranian with him. Although "don't taze me, bro" would have been the icing on the cake.
Oh brother!!...mrniceguy you are wrong on so many levels....so off the mark, I mean to say you couldn't hit the water if you fell from a boat. First off, I respect people who are themselves respectful. You've been spoonfed a line by certain people in the lineup who always play the "respect" card yet don't know respect from shineola. Second off, apparently you have an aversion to the word "educate"....that it is/was "condescending". I propose that is most likely a personal problem. Third off, quirky, brave, and talented? Maybe. I can think of plenty other, more descriptive adjectives than that, but whatever, I'm not here to destroy your surf-idol worshiping fantasy. Here is some unmistakable condescention...please, don't "stop talking", don't "stop talking"...I"m sure there's room in your mouth for the other foot. Of course I mean that in "the good way."
Too much caffeine (or whatever) for sure. And maybe he doesn't understand the rules:
"NOAA regulations also currently allow use of MPWCs by anyone at Mavericks whenever High Surf Warnings are in effect from December through February, regardless of whether their objective is safety, photography, tow surfing, or any other activity. This time-window is deliberately set to avoid impacting seasonal marine mammal pupping and breeding activities at important wildlife areas immediately adjacent to Mavericks. Federally protected local species include harbor seals, sea otters, gray whales, and a variety of seabirds vulnerable to unrestricted use of MPWCs."

@Surfergrrrl... Ha! Perhaps someone should educate Skindog. Where do y'all think we could find someone to take on such an important role.
And @MrNice, you accusing someone else of trolling... Really?
I have to side with Brah, nice guy, et al... NOAA has gone way over-zealous in recent years and it's about time someone relatively high profile finally went off on them. Human life is precious and only a few really great surfers can conquer Mavericks. I don't care if Jeff Clark surfed it alone for years on end, i'm sure he would tell you the same thing. It can be dangerous as hell out there - and to have a safety net such as a PWC in case of emergency for these guys is critical.
I happen to have a certificate I got from Phoenix Online University. I took a course on training skindogs.
On a related note, I think surfergurrrrl has clearly shown she knows how to spank a skindog.
all I'm saying is, this is the guy you are calling garden variety. And yes, this earns my respect.
"@MrNice, you accusing someone else of trolling... Really?"... My thoughts exactly :)
Toe-in....dismissed. Sorry.
He took a big bite, sure...but a toe in is still a toe in.
some waves are too big to paddle into.
tow ins are lame if you're doing it on normal waves just to get a snap of yourself doing a big air but to do it to surf a wave that is otherwise uncatchable seems cool enough to me.
worshipping someone who blatantly disregards the preservation of our oceans for a cheap thrill must feel really good. but i just don't get it. it must feel good to spit in the face of all surfers who over the past several decades have worked tirelessly to clean up our beaches and form long-lasting partnerships with local communities to ensure it stays that way. i just don't feel it. to me, i see some punk with an inflated sense of self putting his need for acceptance by people like mr. niceguy above the need for the preservation of a sport that a long line of people before him have allowed to be elevated to the level it is at now. people who have spent their lives studying marine life in and around half moon bay have shown that watercraft in and around mavericks have a serious negative impact. this is a fact. now some thrill jockeys and their brainless counterparts want to spit in the face of all of us and poison our image. surfing mavericks without the aid of PWCs is dangerous for the people who throw themselves into that situation. i can respect that. but sitting on a high horse and yelling about entitlement is dangerous to all of us. skindog and all of his followers have nothing close to the knowledge that the people who originally enacted the PWC ban have. it is foolish and childish to think they do. if he dies, it isn't because there wasn't a PWC to rescue him, it is because he is surfing a wave that has the power to kill. and he and all of his idiot followers should respect that, respect that they are poisoning the image of our sport, and man up. just as someone shouldn't use the mona lisa as a canvas for a new art piece, skindog and his followers shouldn't poison mavericks and the surrounding ecosystem for the benefit of a few and the detriment of every single future generation of surfers.
"Lighten up Francis."
Seems that this topic has gotten way lost in translation.
But here's a pic I'm sure many of you whiners will enjoy.
And I still side with Skin Dog. Look at the other NOAA guy, he's nodding in agreement with everything Skin Dog says, thus keeping the peace.
"skindog and all of his followers have nothing close to the knowledge that the people who originally enacted the PWC ban have. it is foolish and childish to think they do."
No. What is foolish is to think that some agency who doesn't know or understand the lives of the people who live in and enjoy their own surroundings have the right to establish bullshit regulations based on limited evidence in an arbitrary fashion without consulting the people. This is what is foolish. Its like when urban academics and government suits come out to the country and tell the native americans or the people who are living there how they should act in their own environment. Then they get in back in their cars and drive back to their concrete jungle and think they're saving the earth.. Its like the EPA putting MTBE in gasoline because they think its better for the environment only to find out its worse. Or the hwy 50 project in tahoe that was supposed to improve lake water clarity but only made it worse. Deference to bureaucratic agencies that are often in bed behind closed doors with developers or corporate interests is what is foolish. I am not a fan of jet skis I think their use should be restricted to protect marine life. I also think they are much less destructive than a fuckload of other legal things that are being done today but the reason they are banned is because big wave surfing is high profile and any time something catches a lot of attention meddlers who think they understand the world better than everyone else have to come and take a shit in the punch bowl.
ha! yeah, bastardize the people trying to save our oceans and glorify people stuffing their pockets with money from hollywood. makes perfect sense to me. thanks for reminding me who the good guys are
Hey, a lot of pro athletes sell out. They aren't all bad guys. At least skindog isn't doing Hanes Underwear commercials. Although... that would be absolutely hilarious. as far as "people trying to save our oceans," they should start with that huge trash island in the pacific. That would be a better place to start...
The NOAA dudes were just doing their job, they don't make the rules. They weren't citing them or anything, just basically saying "you know this isn't allowed, right?" If Skindog wants to get uppity that is fine, but he is obviously doing it to the wrong people.
Definitely a situation where being non-confrontational would have served them much better.
I've always admired Ken, and maybe the video is out of context, but he sure does look a lot like an angry, entitled, agressive little douche bag.
If Anyone here was around when the Mavs ski rules were created, they would remember that NOAA made quite an effort over many years to take comments, study the scenereo and come up with an exemption. Let's face it no one wants to rescue these guys. They should do it themselves. They allow skis when it's big, for anything you want to do. Besides Hollywood being in town, I haven't heard of anyone having a problem on any day yet. Hey, who doesn't soak Hollywood? Keep telling the Feds it's not safe and next thing you know they will ban surfing there.
There might also be people here who remember when the NOAA weather radio was your go to source for surf information. It still provides the bulk of information that the surf sites regurgitate to you.
