Small waves on the Great Lakes

I'm about halfway through a two week sentence back home in Indiana. I've got a cousin's wedding, had my high school reunion, and will be celebrating my grandmother's birthday. While that's all well and good, two weeks without surfing is two weeks too long.

Back in January I came across this article:
http://surf.transworld.net/2009/01/28/indiana-iceberg-session/?show=gall...
about the folks that surf in Hammond, just a few miles from my parent's house.

Even though the summer's not known for it's waves, I found a surf shop, grabbed a board, and headed out. The New Buffalo jetty was flat, but Miller Beach was pulling in consistent 1-2ft waves with a few 2 1/2ft standouts. As the day went on, the waves got a little peakier, had some good shoulders, and were peeling nicely for 2ft waves.

Sure it's nothing outstanding, but I had a fun time picking off mellow little rides. Most rides were pretty short (and wobbly as you'll see in my pics), but the waves were easy to catch and it was a trip to get out on some warm, clear, fresh water waves.

All and all it was a little great day on little waves.
I highly recommend getting out if you're ever in the area.

Thanks!

I grabbed a few more waves this morning. Last night's consistent 20 knot winds has the beach at the end of town at a solid 1.5ft-2.5ft with a few hollow and peeling waves off the sand bar.

Rides were still a little short (less wobbly with more speed) but the 4 second intervals was brutal. Easier to catch a wave than catch a break so I'd just ride all the way in to shore, rest, then paddle back out. Whew.

I got in a few really nice long rights. Water is still around 72 with air temps just above 70. :D

Just added some photos from today on flickr:

4s interval eh? That's crazy talk. But 72/70F sounds really nice :)

Found some of nice shots of the lake from last October:

Waves were about 1.5-2ft. So clear you could see all the way to Chicago.

^ Striking photo!

...just realized how few and far between really interesting urban surf pictures there are. Most have maybe a glimpse of some beach condos. Last really cool one I remember was on here, the standing river wave in Toronto, with that Habitat '67 apartment complex in the background.
