Surfers of all skill and anger levels should be uniting and getting fired up about. I know I see it at every break I surf in the North Bay. The tiny little chomped up digestible plastic pieces are the ones that really turn my stomach. So when the locals tell you to take a hike... at least pick up some plastic on the way out.

Wow redtim, that sounds like a serious challenge. I think I'll give it a shot. Food is going to be the hard one, so much comes caked in plastic.
Did anyone see that SunChips have extended their green policies beyond using solar power to also include biodegradable packaging? http://www.sunchips.com/healthier_planet.shtml?s=content_compostable_pac...
There are a number of common plastic items I'd love to see made out of biodegradable veg material. I'll admit the first time I used a compostable fork in hot food it dissolved, but in that 2 year span the durability and possibilities for biodegradable plastics have really improved.

theplastiki.com is a cool site to check out. I got to work with them and they are raising awareness about single use plastics by sailing from SF to Sydney in a boat that uses 2 liter bottles for it's floatation.

@friscohio: in your opinion, is the problem using plastics or failing to dispose of it properly?
Is it harmful if it's sitting in a landfill? (I honestly don't know)

Overuse of plastic (particularly single use plastics) and failing to dispose of plastics properly are both to blame. The scary part is that not that many people are aware of the problem and worse yet, some people just don't care.
Always pick up a piece of trash on your way out of the water! Of course at OB, try and pick up about 5 or 6 pieces of trash! Sometimes my hands are full by the time I get to the lot.

Gotta say that when I gave up diet coke for coffee plastics was part of my thinking...
Picked up a handful of bio plastic forks/spoons last time I was at Whole Paycheck um Foods...
But food packaging is the really hard one for me... cause Trader Joe's are packaging fools!
