So whatever happened to Mavericks?

What has become of the Mavericks surf contest? Two things: a wild winter and some really bad luck.

In terms of raw, powerful surf, this has been one of the most impressive winters in years. Grant Washburn, the Mavericks regular who documents the details of every swell, said this week he's put in 29 sessions since the big-wave season began in October, "and as a group, we're close to 40 days, which makes this an exceptional year."

When will these knuckleheads get it together to hold the contest in November? Always seems to be an epic early season clean swell then. Who cares if a bunch of the 1st seeds cant make it. Go with the alternates and run a great event!

That system moving in next Friday does look pretty intense. Hopefully it holds up!

i have posted on this before, 1 simple reason. voting. once some idiot decided to leave the contest in the hands of surfers it was forever doomed. my guess is that it will never run again, the silly voting nonsense and the pending Clark vs Mavericks Inc. lawsuit have forever killed the event. RIP Mavericks Contest.

I agree with dsx2000. How can you keep a surf contest true to it's roots when the corporate sponsorship dollar wants return on investment. I wrote a post on my blog about this very subject, if you are interested, http://www.blog.montaralife.com/2010/01/21/jeff-clark-comes-out-fighting...
