Some like it Haut

Master surfboard shapers will take the phrase "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" literally next month.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Doug Haut's surfboard shaping career, five shapers who are distinguished in their own right will compete in the Sacred Craft Tribute to the Masters Shape-off. Mark Angell, Wayne Rich, Bob Pearson, Steve Coletta and Ward Coffey will take to the shaping bay March 19-20 to see who can most closely replicate a classic Haut design.

Sacred Craft is a surf show usually based in Southern California, but it's making a special trip north to the Santa Cruz area to honor Haut.

I was pretty excited when I had heard that Sacred Craft was going to be in Santa Cruz. I've been interested in it but not really in traveling to get there. Anybody been to Sacred Craft down south?

I usually surf on a quad Doug Haut made for me. Rarely surf anything else if the conditions are even marginally within its range. Was worth a couple of extra trips to SC for sure.

Yeah, I've been to several Sacred Crafts in Del Mar. Pretty sweet event. It's all board builders, craftsmen, and artists. It's a "core" show and was only $5 to get in. There's not many other shows where you can speak one-on-one with the top shapers and craftsmen in the industry, all in the same place. All super nice and genuine people. None of that surf shop 'tude going on.

I've also been to a couple ASR shows where it's all about image, style, and soft goods. Up until a couple years ago, it was invite only, and the board builders that were there were the big names like CI, Rusty, ...Lost, etc.

If you're going to go to a surf expo, Sacred Craft is legit. I'm definitely planning on going. And hopefully I get to meet Doug Haut and maybe talk to him about getting a custom stick. I ride some D. Haut 4.38" template fins and they are the best.
