Some friends and I bought a crappy old 80's waterski boat and took it to Lake Sonoma and camped for a week. Ridiculously fun to surf behind it, at least when its not breaking down. Here's my wave of the day:
@sandcastle: I'm clearly no expert, but I'd say its not waterskiing either. Just saying...
But trust me when I say this is waaaaay frickin fun for surfers.
Which, of course, isn't saying its surfing.
@Burro: oh man that's awesome. Believe me we've been trying to drop the rope, with a huge variety of boards (single fin no rocker longboard, to a 5'8" fish, to the mini gun in the vid I posted), but our current theory is its not possible without adding some ballast to make a bigger wake, like those guys are doing. Even though our boat is named The Floater, he currently has some trouble floating, so we're hesitant to install a water bladder that would add another 2000 pounds, but with the right combination of beers and boredom anything is possible...

We also have an exposed prop so can't get super close to the back of the boat, but the guy in that vid isn't getting very close either, so that's no problem for him. But usually when I see people drop the rope the nose of their board is almost touching the boat, like this guy:
