Rant - Something to think about

Big props to my boy Jameson G., sunset resident, and OB waterman. On Wednesday (might of been Thursday) after finishing up his session he was walking home along the high tide line when he noticed a board washed up on the beach. Immediately sensing something was wrong he started to survey the break when he spotted a drowning man stuck in between the inner and out bars taking a pounding. Jameson doing what comes naturally dropped his board on the beach and furiously swam towards the man in distress. I’m glad to say that Jameson was able to reach the unknown surfer in time and pulled him to shore. Apparently the surfers leash snapped and in between the currents and large surf he was unable to make it to shore. For his heroism I will let him drop in on me any day.

P.S. I went out today and purchased a new leash.

I give that guy big time props. Brings back memories of losing my board in solid overhead OB surf and having the scary realization of a long, lonely punishing swim set in. You don't realize how much of a life line your board is for you until you lose it and are reliant on your swimming ability alone to save yourself. Happy to hear everyone was able to go home to there families! Again, big time props to your buddy. Nice work.

Yea, it's great to hear that story had a happy ending. I don't enjoy the boardless swim back in, which invariably happens on a bigger day.

I did the same thing with some SUP dude (some here would question whether SUPS should be helped at all hahaha :) )
His board was washed up on shore, and I ran in looking for him.
He was already on the inside. It's truly a lonely feeling when your board is at shore and you're not. Thanks Jameson G!!!!!!!!!

Truly heroic and selfless. Question though: if we find ourselves in the same position as Jameson, is it better to go in without a board? I ask b/c in Hawaii and So Cal the lifeguards use boards when they rescue. Thoughts?

I'd take a board. You can always ditch it if it becomes too much to handle. But floatation is floatation particularly when dealing with a very tired victim.

Agreed. A board can be key. Especially if the victim is panicking, you can push them the board so they can get flotation without the risk that they'll take you under too.

totes on all comments...dude, you want your board out there. A good surfer will duckdive all the whitestuff even if it's hectic and go get the guy.
