I just finished this one today...kind of a weird design, I know. I lamed three sheets of 3/16" ply with the middle sheet stained a dark color prior to glue up. The handle was rescued from the trash, as was the ply, of an unappreciative owner of a remodeled house then wrapped with neoprene from an old bootie. I'm planning on surfing it tomorrow...wish me luck!
next project in the works is a handplane cut from a solid block of old growth redwood...again, saved from the garbage pile.

That's rad. Does your hand hold the handle like you're opening a drawer, or does your hand go under the handle? In either case it has the advantage of being easy to switch hands quickly depending on which way you're going.

Nice job Surfoakland! The lamination offset looks great. Recycled materials, flawless execution AND channels! Give us a performance report after you try it out.

That's pretty sweet! I tried using drawer-pulls for handplanes, but personally I prefer the hole in the board... I think it provides the best control. I added a strap of neoprene to keep the forearm down on the tail.
The next one is my take on a "flex-spoon" handplane... the board and fin have a bit of flex to them.
The last one is a pin-tail made from solid koa... this thing keeps momentum through chop on those lumpy OB days.
Making handplanes is a really fun way to stay stoked when the beach isn't cooperating... like today.

Love this stuff! Never really thought about doing something like this at OBSF but now that spring time conditions seem to be here...buy some fins, make a plane...sounds great, maybe I will see you out there.
