Rant - Spot Check

Some friends (from out of town, just getting started *with the whole surfing thing*) and I are driving down to Los Angeles for the weekend and we're looking for somewhere to surf on the way tomorrow. Looking for a casual, fun place to surf (that is, for learning types). Any ideas?

I've stopped at shell beach and been STOKED several times. 101 to shell beach exit, go about 1/4 mile, park, and stoke. Pismo Beach area.

if there is some swell in the water, campus point at UCSB is a fun, easy wave, albeit crowded at times.

A little farther south than LA, near that nuclear power plant thingy, is heaven on earth for beginners. Its where Gidget comes to life...

Devereaux or Leadbetter is better for beginners than Campus if you are thinking of stopping in SB.

We ended up getting distracted hiking at Pinnacles for a while. Took the easy way out and stopped at Pismo. I don't think my friend had much luck on the inside, but I found a few fun ones as the sun went down. Very light crowd, fair number of closeouts, but mostly clean, plus perfect weather.

Take a look at Refugio.
