Stoke Report Groms?

Rant - Stoke Report Groms?

So my kid is in an "on again" phase of his on-again, off-again surfing career. He's 12, still struggling with standing up on a big board, but is stoked on it all at the moment. We'll prolly hit lindy tomorrow morning. Any other Stoke Report groms out there wanna come with? would be cool to get a New Generation together and I know my kid would love having others around while he's whaling away... just a thought...

pic is from seven (!) years ago...

Daughter, 14, ballerina, neg. Totally sworn and disavowed despite my pleas. @Tracey suggested that I disallow surfing and that the natural effect would be she'd want to :) I kind of believe it :)

We're stuck in the "off" phase right now, but I can always see how the suggestion flies tomorrow morning. I suggested we try it down at the Beach today, but no interest.

I just took my young ones down to Morro to body surf and bodyboard. Actually got them turning the bodyboards into the wave face, resulting in actual trimming and not the usual over the falls then go straight lunacy. Also got them duck diving. The key to success:

1. They are good swimmers and love the water
2. They like getting tumbled by the waves....to a point
3. Bodyboards are way softer and easier than surfboards at this point
4. Swim fins to get into the wave earlier
5. Me leaving the surfboard on the beach and bodyboarding with them
6. A 4/3 full suit for each kid

That last one is the key. They could stay out for 1.5 hours no problem, despite their non-existent fat layers.

As they get more proficient with wave knowledge, turning and trimming, duck diving, then I'll reintroduce the longboard.

I can't go tomorrow, but good luck. Hope this helps.

Heh- My trick went like this:

My 9yo did a report on Sea Otters in school this year. I suggested that we paddle out at an eastside SC break (where I've seen a few) to shoot pics of otters. There were no otters, so we rode waves instead. We'll go back for more soon.

This weekend is bad, but I'd be game to try this sometime.

++ on the 4/3 suit recommendation.

Get them every piece of neoprene you can afford. Head to toe, fully covered. Hood, gloves, booties, etc. 4/3 wetsuit is a must.

If you don't roll with that, you just wasted your silver bullet.

If your kids are old enough to surf and you choose to introduce them to it - they now have priority over you. Spend for them, suck it up for you. You can argue this, but you'll be wrong.

Well, she's 14 and defiant. Like I said, I gotta tell her she can't surf! :D
Oh well...I'll be a good dad and take her to ballet.

I don't get the neoprene recs.

Mainly because I'm bitter as I move closer to 30, I see kids playing on the beach playing in the water just trunking; at the same time it's windy and foggy the little shits could not give a damn. Visually, it reminds me of that age and then I become salty because I can't handle the cold anymore and rely on technology.
