SUP vs Hipster

It seems to me that Johnny boy couldn't make the section, so the SUP ( so called kook) dropped in and was started his ride, Then Kyle "cool guy hipster" snaked him and was super cool and made the SUP'r bail. It seems like the KOOK in this situation was Kyle "cool guy hipster".

FYI; I am not a SUP'r

I'm with CS Elliot. It would seem that Kyle is a "cool guy hipster", of the dickhead variety, who probably fancies himself as the new Miki Dora. Newsflash, Kyle: you ain't.

Not a SUP'r either.

(in a recent Rant, people were debating the difference between 'dropping in' and 'snaking' - here is a perfect example of 'snaking' being illustrated by cool guy hipster dickhead. There's a reason it's called 'snaking': it's the lowest form of dropping in)

Indeed. This is an almost textbook snake. Typically a maneuver that a better surfer does which makes it all the more devious. Whereas a drop-in is usually an accident a snake is nearly always malicious.

I'm torn on this one, I can't tell if the first guy was just about to come around the corner and the "SUK" made the wave break earlier or if first guy had no hope of ever making it.

The plot thickens! From Michael Kew's blog: "Johnny McCann's wave got wrecked by a SUK (Stand Up Kook) donkey yesterday, so his bro Kyle Albers, vehemently anti-SUK, returned the favor. Kudos, Kyle!"

He has more videos of insanely crowded Rincon at his Vimeo site: http://vimeo.com/user6819335

@ fishyfish , I was thinking the same thing If the SUP'r never dropped in maybe Johnny Boy could have made the section, but "cool guy hipster" probably would have snaked him too.

@Rick Kane... It all makes sense now! But as they say " an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind" . Damn that was deep...

waggy

I guess this proves context is everything. I'm still going with dickhead move though.

wolfpack

SUKs are fair game for anything since they are technically considered vessels by the coast guard and do not belong on the waves.

Glad that ain't my home break is all I can say.

I guess that explains why your name isn't 'goinright'. Ha. Ha. Ha.

fullybrah

too much testosterone in the water. sharks need to thin out the surfer dick population.

drei

I'm not sure who was to blame for what here, but I would be wary of snakin a man carrying a six foot staff with a blade on the end.

Any thoughts on what board kyle is riding? Length, shaper, serial number.

SUPbro

Looks to me like first guy had at least had a chance to make the section since the wave held back a bit... that is, until SUK dropped in. So.. yeah... SUK deserved what he got from third guy (apparently first guy's buddy).

Ordinarily this seems dickheadish. In context, I approve.

I'd call the SUP move a shoulder hop. A subtle way of saying "yeah that guy's a dick.". This is a point wave. The first shortboarder could have made that section

zachsnow

If he could have made the section then he should have made the section. Then we'd be arguing about whether it's a dick move to dump someone that burned you.

I'd still be inclined to say yes, but that's just me.

The guy that filmed this is from San Diego, the guy that got dropped in on by the SUP is from Alabama(seriously), and I'm pretty sure Kyle Albers went to UCSB so I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that he's not from the area. This crew has been parading around as locals and they need to be put in their place. Don't get me wrong the janitor is a choad and was dealt with appropriately but this new influx of hipster bullshit is getting annoying.

Bottom line: the SUPer RUINED a perfect Rincon set wave for a far more talented surfer. SUPers should barely be surfing crowded Rincon, much less burning guys on set waves. Anyone who thinks that Kyle is in the wrong either (a) has been surfing less than 10 years or (b) has never surfed good Rincon and doesn't realize that Johnny probably sat out the back for over an hour to catch that wave.

@ Falcon: you seem like you know Johnny and Kyle pretty well to be talking shit on them in an online forum. But you're right! We need to put those HIPSTERS in their place! Look at them, surfing Rincon everyday, being friendly enough to get to know people and being good enough at surfing to catch a wave, PARADING AS LOCALS!!!

SUPbro

@blizz, the fact that he's a SUPer has nothing to do with it. He dropped in. If he dropped in on a shortboard he would've still been an asshole. SUPer's have just has much right to be out there and deserve as much respect on the wave as anyone (until they start being an asshole, like this guy).

c.elliot

I'm with @zachsnow, if he could of made that section , then why didn't he make the section? Hipster Cool guy is a Dick..... Even if his friend got burned the day before, can't we all just get along? and It is hard to be a hipster, you need tight pants, a single speed bike, weigh 85 pounds, and drink Pabst.

FYI: I am not a SUP"r or a hipster.. ;)

behindThePeak

there's no way that first dude was going to make that section. He lost that wave when he lined up wrong in the first place; SUP had nothing to do with it. A true local worth respecting wouldn't have let the peak outrun him like that.

zach is right, if the shortboarder had caught up with SUP then it would be a different story. but the real story is this: one guy who sits too deep, another who who hops the shoulder, and a third who's a snake. I say they're all lame and should stay down south. ;-)

that said, that was a slick move by the kyle guy. lame as it was, it was pretty impressive board control.

Quadrafino

Agree with aptly named @ "behindThePeak" Johnny did NOT make the section so it was not a true burn or drop in. Its Rincon if someone is not going to make the section someone has to go.... Props to @waggy for pointing out the "snake" move by Kyle. I was snaked by a teenage kid at the Hook (paddled inside of me at last minute) in SC during the last swell and I simply refused to pull out and just continued to ride the wave and not cut back far enough to run into him......

blizz

I think you are all underestimating how a 12 foot SUP can CREATE a huge section on an otherwise perfect Rincon wave. The point is that Johnny would have made the wave but for the SUPer burning him and creating the section.

What we're actually talking about is a guy ruining a wave that could have (maybe) been one of the best quality waves Johnny catches all year (or in years)...

@ SupDude: in an ideal world, SUPers should definitely have the same place in the lineup as everybody else. But we're talking a pumping day at Rincon here, not an average day at the Beach or even a fun day at Indicators. The takeoff zone at Rincon is relatively tight; the surfers are good (or professionals) and generally don't fall; it's nothing personal against SUP, but just that on this specific day and at this specific break, SUPs are incompatible with the other 200 surfers also in the water. Of course, there are always exceptions.

have to say, loving this new meme of posting questionable behavior in the water and playing jury. thumbs up.

Verdict is in; The Hipster is GUILTY! Of being a snake! The Sentence : no Pabst Blue Ribbon for 1 week!

Rick Kane

Agree with cyclona23. The irony here is that the SUP drop-in was a decision that was made in a fraction of a second 300 miles down the coast about a week ago, and here we are debating this on an online forum for a full day as if our ramblings could somehow remedy the situation or decide someone's fate.

I'm gonna cheer up by watching my favorite movie sequence, evar.

this was a wide swinging set that hit a lil inside therefore closing out everybody but me and the suk. the section was totally makable, relatively easy. If you watch the first few seconds i'm high lining enough to make a bottom turn around but then there was a big sup-rise to me, a huge mush section, totally impassable. But I was glad to see Kyle later and hear the whole story on that wave. I did manage to get another one though! By the way SWEEP THE STREETS NOT THE LINEUP NO SUP! Suk ruined the wave.

SUPers kinda annoy me too. Too bad the reward for snaking him and throwing him off his board was an incredibly lame hipster-style head dip

I thought surfing was to ironic to participate in for true hipsters.

I was out at the Lane last Friday out at the tip of the point. There were only about 10 of us out across the entire break and a SUP paddled out to the peak. The waves were DOH+ on the sets and the SUP set up on the shoulder waiting for waves. He didn't paddle outside or drop in on anyone the entire time I was there, which was about 3 hours. He didn't go directly to the peak where it was inevitable that he would have taken a few on the head, lost his mondo board, and potentially decapitated someone else. Eventually, after an hour or so, he moved inside a bit and caught some of the smaller ones, looking like he had a great time. He was courteous, never dropped in, shoulder hopped, snaked or anything. SUP or not, he was a respectful surfer.

Real men do it laying down

Quadrafino

Upon further review of the first few seconds its harder for me to say if Johnny could have made the section or not? Hard to determine since its not all in the screen. Anyway I was thinking about planning a trip down to Rincon in a month or so but I'm having some second thoughts on if its really worth it........ Was probably just going to surf there one session and then hit some other spots. One good long wave there is worth a lot of trouble though........

if SUP'er is going to get on a wave, he might as well be laying down like the rest of us and paddle in with his hands. obviously super cool hipster dork jabronee needed to emo himself out and try to prove to the other surf community that his was sooooooo coool bay taking Sup'er out. Where's the love when it comes to riding waves. paddle in with your hands on your belly or on your knees like the ancient Hawaiins. Sup's belong out on Lake tahoe or on ob where there are plenty of waves to go around. pace
