Surf Helmet Thoughts

As long as you're not surfing 2ft Linda Mar or 10ft Pipe you'll be fine without one.

I was happily puttering around on 2ft Linda Mar tonight; another gentleman was sporting a helmet.

Ain't no shame wearing a helmet. I almost plowed somebody that cut in front of me the other day. My board was heading straight for his head. And I have a sharp point...

My advice is stop surfing crowded spots where kooks reside. There are many other surf-able waves along the San Mateo coastline, like this one that have only 2 or 3 guys out. Any takers?

Unless you are surfing over a shallow reef pass in a remote island like the guys in "Second Thoughts", the odds of a helmet actually helping you are pretty low. Go for a higher bro score and don't rock the melon cap.

I favor any helmet that relates to the dark lord of star wars!

I looked into a helmet a few years back. Then I realized that I'd be better off avoiding places where a helmet would be useful. So I stopped paddling out with Anthony Kiedis during his relapses and at Mork's. Problem solved.

haha yeah TJ was easy on the eyes, but I think Kristen Sze really moved in on her.

I wear a Gath Surf Convertible helmet. It's saved me from head injuries several times, from other people's boards and my own. It's lightweight and doesn't feel much different than wearing a hood.

Most people don't wear helmets because it's not cool and it's not cool because most people don't wear helmets. But I'm trying to start a trend ;)

when it feels like a board might be near you when re surfacing put your arms over your head like a earthquake drill. works like a charm. heres what im rockin, a little old school

I used to wear a helmet when I used to bodyboard years ago, and my head was eye level with surfer's surf boards...I decided I no longer wanted to be a "speed bump" to surfers. Anyyway, for awhile I wore a helmet when I started surfing, but I quickly found that if you surf bigger waves, and then you wipe out, your neck gets tweaked pretty badly with a helmet on. I also had a very light Gath. For me, at least it was heavy enough to cause my head to swivel around too much like Linda Blair.

I save the helmet now for heavier reef situations. I saw a guy get scalped by the reef in Bali.
