I think the review def hit what I was thinking watching the trailer: What the hell is Rob Machado so unhappy about?
Hurley / Nike marketing jerks probably directed him to adopt this b.s. soul surfer/suffer pose.
The Malloy Bros. do the same free-surf lifestyle thing with Patagonia but at least they do it with a sense of humor and fun. Photo here of one of them standing on a ladder attached to a longboard...riding a wave.

I didn't read the article yet but "California Surf Project" is a really nice coffeetable book, that gives you a bit of that nice feeling of familiarity when you look at some of the photos. However, many or most of the photos are not of surfing or waves, so it may not be everyone's cup o' tea.
