Rant - Surf Report - North Shore Kauai

10-12ft+ Hawaiian at best N/NW facing breaks. Lines stacked all the way to the outer reefs. Since I ain't no Shane Dorian, I ended up surfing shoulder high Hanalei Pier with all the Kauai super groms. Drifted toward Middles where there was some heavy 3-4ft OH+ close out bombs detonating on the inside. Session highlights include:

-80 degree bath water ocean temps
-Tons of hot surfer babes
-Super friendly locals
-Nipple chafing (okay, not really a highlight, but trunkin' it is da best!)

Jealous. Such a wonderful place to be when it's good, or whenever for that matter. Hopefully you scored that insane airfare deal that Alaska threw up for this month too. Nice Napali area pics as well. I saw some guys towing some monster shit around those parts years back. Have fun and get some more.

@im-white - Middles is the spot in between the Pier and Pine Trees. It looks like a good body surf/board spot as it's mostly thumping closeouts. I'll probably take my GoPro out there and try to get some barrel shots.

I've seen that Banana Joe's stand on the side of the highway near our condo. I'm pretty sure it's been open all week. I'm actually going to check out a surf spot over there today. I'll confirm. Anyone surf Rock Quarry's?

Middles is not in between the Pier and Pine Trees. Middles is the left off the sand finger that extends out from the beach just to the south side of Pine Trees.

You can go right on it too, but if the swell is that big, you likely shouldn't.

To clarify, Middles is actually more towards the other of the side of the bay. It sits down a ways from the area's left point and breaks way out. You're talking about the beach breaks near the Pavillion. Anyhow, Kiluea/RQ tends to be a tradewrap or NE spot that is utilized when other northerly and northwesterly facing places are flat or not working with the angle. If there's swell in the water and the winds are manageable, you're probably best hunting around Hanalei and Haena. Careful if you opt for the second town as those spots are potentially quite heavy and dangerous. There are plenty of options...

sounds like the location of middles is muddled.

kaiser is right... hurricane u r refering to summers... on another note RQ has never been the same since the dam broke. it used to be insane but nowdays the bars just ain't lined up. think of Haena like OB or mini mavs just be rdy

Kaiser and I are referring to the same place, @Im-white. We just described it from slightly different perspectives. Middle-left side of the bay, a lengthy paddle outside, and predominantly breaking left. There are more lefts on the reefs leading up to the west end of the bay as well. Good looking out though. Don't forget to mention that Haena's handful of spots are a lot shallower and sharper than anything around these parts.

Middles is ###### between the front, back, left, and right side of the break(s). Bring me back a smoothie from Banana Joe? I'll block for you at Middles OB.

Word. I was talking to a local about where to go out and he made it sound like Middles is in between the Pier and Pine Trees. Yeah, I definitely didn't surf over there as it was macking yesterday. I'll stick to the kiddie pool.

Waikoko's is the other left, acts like a point on the southern side of the bay. Some call it Why-go-there's. It has it time and place, just don't look down unless you like hammerheads.

Middles can be incredible on a swell like they are getting. Sucks out and down off the reef and can be insanely fun. Breaks boards. And yes, hurricanewe and I are talking about the same place. Go out to the point if you can handle the crowd when the swell backs down. Or, head up around the east side of Princeville and drive down some dirt roads - you might find a gem down some of those roads.
