A 35-year-old man lost a finger in a surfing accident in the South Mission Beach area around 9 a.m. today.
Lifeguards and medical personnel were attending to the man's injury, a lifeguard spokesman said. The leash, which secures the board to the surfer, apparently became entangled around the finger and severed it.
The finger, said the lifeguard spokesman, "was lost to the sea."
...and, Jerry Garcia lost two-thirds of his right middle finger as a child, while steadying wood his father was chopping... and, Django Reinhart's fourth and fifth fingers of his left hand (the hand he used to fret the guitar) were badly burned (in a freak fire accident) and remained partially paralyzed for the rest of his life. This surfer should immediately buy a high-end guitar and start ripping.

A co-worker took a surf lesson down at Linda Mar some years ago and got out of the water missing part of her little finger.
She said the leash pinched it off when it got wrapped around it. It seemed impossible to me and I've always been a little suspicious of the story but now I'm starting to believe her. And she *is* missing the end of her little finger. Maybe this happens all the time!
