seriously, "ob near China beach"!? maybe he was out near some bridge and the paper is just being vague? reported at 10:15 and found at 10:45, that's right at the top of the tide as it was switching. weird.

I know somebody who got sucked out from the popular bookend than into baker beach- a sponger. luckily picked up by the coast guard. apparently it's humiliating and one is filled with shame after such an experience- so he said.

Again, bad reporting... Sounds like he went missing well before 10am... http://oceanbeachbulletin.com/2011/02/03/surfer-rescued-from-ocean-beach...

that makes more sense. i love how the fire chief is referred to as "the Busalacchi, chief of Battalion 8." badass.
is it wrong that i enjoy the fact that there is some out of town surfer laying in his own puddle of shame and self loathing from being rescued by the Busalacchi?

Maybe the reporter has his own set of rules somewhat like SR, and wouldn't report on the actual beach he was surfing at ; - ) Or, and here's the scenario I like, he caught a passing freighters wake and tried to surf it into the Bay.

Just between you and I, i feel like I'm gonna drown 90% of the time I surf OB. The place always freaks me out.

Even after the peak of high tide, the flood current under the Golden Gate can continue to push eastward (in from the Ocean) for a couple hours. Think momentum. It takes a while for the slack and then the ebb current to kick back in. So, it's plausible that the guy was still being pushed around Lands End toward the Golden Gate even if high tide had already peaked.

Location Turtle, if you're calling 911 to have a buddy rescued, is it OK to name the beach?

While midbeach to China seems really unusual, I've seen more than one boarder sucked around the corner. Plus, the rips and longshore currents have been damned tricky and strong with these steep tidal gradients. I got pushed out w-a-a-y past where I wanted to be very quickly yesterday and it didn't seem I was making much progress paddling in. I was getting ready to go diagonal, but caught a lucky outside wave that resolved the problem. I was on the top of the dunes a few mornings ago and saw a massive rip (200 yards wide, a quarter mile out) distinctly outlined against the rest of the lineup. Bottom line, keep track of your whereabouts. OB doesn't suffer fools lightly.

In the late 80's my buddy got pulled out past the corner. He and a body boarder named Guido could not paddle back against the current. Coast Guard saved them just after dusk. Embarrassed, for sure. Main thing was he thought he was gonna die with a guy named Guido.

It's obvious. He was on his way to Marin. I have mentioned this many times here on SR. It is not for those without cab fare. Tides and fog and pursuit of surf. Strange things can happen. Let's see if someone can do it in 25 minutes tomorrow...&^%$SDF

"The Busalacchi." D'oh! I'll go back and fix that. Funny thing is a few hours later I ran into The Busalacchi in line at Walgreens on 40th/######. He was not in full gear so I only recognized him by his mustache. It rules exactly as much as you'd think The Busalacchi's mustache would rule.
Don't be *too* hard on those reporters who don't know what a rip is and how the currents work around the Gate. Most you guys know that I don't surf (this is Tom -- Mark surfs) but I study the water to improve my fishing. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that someone should know what they're getting into before they get in the water, yet I've met plenty of fishermen and boaters who hardly know anything about the currents at the Gate.

I'm too sexy for my firetruck. So awesome. Beyond awesome. Before I saw it was a clip I thought it might be a "stock photo," like something each engine, sorry, ladder truck, sends out to news teams. You know, just so they can have a photo to pair up with the story.
