SAN FRANCISCO -- Firefighters were called to assist a surfer who got caught in a strong current off the San Francisco coast early Wednesday afternoon.

The fire department received a report at 12:30 p.m. of a surfer in distress in the ocean near Sl0at Boulevard and Great Highway, department spokeswoman Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.

A rescue crew arrived and helped escort the surfer safely to shore at about 12:50 p.m.
U.S. Coast Guard assistance was requested but the request was quickly canceled, Talmadge said.

I'm not one to throw stones, as I know one day it could be me, with the dog just sitting there, watching on shore.
But uhhhh come on now. Today?

I had the exact same reaction. Ankle-high and there was a rescue today? My goodness.

Seems strange..

Maybe the guy ripped a few too many bong hits before paddling out, or was tweaking on mushrooms, or was just baseline psychotic. Or maybe just "not gripping" for any of a million reasons. People freak out in their own bedrooms, or on the way to the corner store, all the time. Definitely strange, but humans are VERY strange.

So the fire dept. saved him.
Did they swim out to him with a hose?
Or does that ladder reallllllllly extend?
Or was he already washed up on the beach exhausted?
Or was he really just looking for some form of excitement out there seeing there were no waves?

Given the conditions yesterday, I'd guess they simply walked out to him.
