A group of big-wave surfers wants to return the Mavericks Surf Contest to its roots, and it is vying for the right to hold the event instead of Mavericks Surf Ventures Inc., the company the surfers claim has steered the competition off-course.
The group, which includes several veteran Mavericks competitors and other luminaries of big-wave surfing, says it is about to apply for the lone event permit from the San Mateo County Harbor District with the goal of staging a toned-down contest in the spirit of community and camaraderie instead of commerce.
