Surfers lobby to OK PWC rescues in marine sanctuary at Maverick's

With San Clemente surfer Jacob Trette's drowning at Maverick's during a freak set of large waves last month, the debate about a 2008 regulation limiting personal watercraft in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary has been reignited.

On Thursday, about 70 people packed a Sanctuary Advisory Council meeting in Half Moon Bay to plead for more leniency for rescue craft in big wave surf spots like Maverick's.

On Jan. 22, Australian surf photographer Russel Ord rescued Trette, 30, after the surfer endured two two-wave hold downs. Ord brought an unconscious Trette to shore aboard a PWC he had borrowed for the day from Santa Cruz surfer Ken "Skindog" Collins.

PWC ban is the most ridiculous thing ever. I consider myself liberal, and I think NOAA is being radical with this decision. Why not limit the ban to towing, and allow them there for rescue purposes?
