Surfing the Holy Land

Rant - Surfing the Holy Land

I'm on my way to the land of milk and honey (aka Israel) for work for a couple weeks, and I was wondering if anyone has ever surfed the beaches of Tel Aviv.

I know Doc Paskowitz brought surfing to Israel, but I haven't heard much else about surf in the holy land.

So if anyone has any recommendations or advice, let me know...

There was an article in TSJ a while back on it. From what I remember, very, very crowded and marginal surf that sometimes gets good. Here's a link to a summary of breaks: http://www.angelfire.com/mo/bellz/spots.html

Good luck. :)

Thanks, @H2OMansLibrary, I'm staying near the Hilton, so maybe I'll try there. Regardless, I'll report back. Flight leaves in 20 minutes.

go to wannasurf.com: http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/Middle_East/Israel/index.html or ask a wiseman.

Thanks, guys. I went down to the beach before work this morning and found a wiseman carrying a fish. He led me to Topsea Surfing Center, which is run by the son of Shamai "Topsi" Kanzapolski - a lifeguard who helped Doc Paskowitz spread the stoke in Israel back in the 50's. He was also Israel's first shaper.

Here are a few shots from this morning during a thunderstorm. There were two surfers out and about 5 kayakers. I watched for ~15 minutes and neither surfer got into anything. Might clean up this weekend...

Cool! A buddy gave me the Surf Wise dvd about the Paskowitz clan recently. Worth a peep.
