Rant - Surfline Launches HD Surf Cams on the iPhone

Over the past year, Surfline has grown its surf cam network to include 84 HD cameras at the most prime surfing locations around the world. Today, Surfline has launched these HD cams on mobile.surfline.com for the iPhone and iPod touch. With this new technology, surfers are able to see, right in the palm of their hand, live swell, wave and weather conditions - like they are standing and looking out at their favorite surf spot.

Ryan Kloostrsa, a Surfline premium member since 2007 says, "HD cams on mobile is the greatest thing I've seen for checking surf. I'm freakin' out."

For a limited time, Surfline is providing free access to HD surf cams on the iPhone and iPod touch. Simply go to http://www.surfline.com/registration, click "Register for free" and create your account. Once you confirm your account by email, follow these steps.

1. Using your phone's web browser, enter "mobile.surfline.com"
2. Login using your email and password
3. Find a surf spot by city name or spot name
4. Then, click, "VIEW THIS STREAM IN HD"

After the free access period ends March 31, 2010, HD surf cams will be for the exclusive use of Surfline premium subscribers. (Free, low-resolution surf cam images will continue to be available on mobile phones.)

Surfline's founder Sean Collins concludes, "With Surfline's HD cams on phones, surfers will never be too far away to check the surf. Wherever you are in the world, the feeling is like you're right there on the beach watching the action. It's been an amazing road with the advancement of the Internet and now wireless, and what we can provide surfers worldwide. I'm stoked to be a part of the process."

They always seem to focus on the iPhone. It also works on other mobile devices, like my Google Droid.

Sounds like they've only tested it for iPhone/iPod. That makes sense. I guess it's easier than saying it probably will work on your higher end video enabled smartphone, but we're not 100% sure yet. Glad you got it to work just fine on your Droid! There's a mobile developer out there sighing relief.

Tracey and I have an acute feeling of the pain developing for mobile phones. Good for surfline exposing this feature. I am tired of waiting around for flash to come to my phone so I can see qik reports and other video sites. Hurry up already.
