Talking about an all-out ban on dogs on most of Ocean Beach

1895

This really snuffed my stoke this morning:

"On Ocean Beach, off-leash dog walking would be allowed only north of Stairwell 21, which is closest to the Cliff House. No dogs at all would be allowed south of that area on the beach."

I read this this morning. Total BS. If you want to complain, better places to do it than Stokereport are listed below:

March 2: 4 to 8 p.m., Tamalpais High Student Center, 700 Miller Ave., Mill Valley.

March 5: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., San Francisco State University, Seven Hills Conference Center, State Drive, S.F.

March 7: 4 to 8 p.m., Fort Mason Center, Building A, Marina Boulevard at Buchanan Street, S.F.

Stacey might not like it, but the plovers would be pretty stoked.

Seems like people aren't following the existing rules already. This morning I was a little annoyed at seeing several dogs running off-leash after birds including our favorite snowy plovers. This is a well posted zone where off-leash is already banned to help protect the birds.

A special place in hell must be reserved for dog owners that bag their dog poop and then leave the plastic bag on the beach. Thanks for not just one but two types of trash you a holes.

Interesting to me is that leash laws work surprisingly well in, of all places, right-wing San Diego. They're willing to let the govt tell them no dogs on the beaches during the middle of the day, and on leash the rest of the time. Tickets are handed out.

KoK: It's precisely liberal, entitled San Franciscans that smart the most at leash laws. Dog owners here are one of the whiniest special-interest groups in a city full of whiny special-interest groups.

Dog owners: Earth to you: your dog is not special. Put him on a fucking leash and keep him away from children and precious natural resources. If you're having trouble with this directive, shred your copy of "BAY WOOF" and have a kid or two.

pretty simple. leave your f-ing dogs at home. dont bring them to the beach. DOGS NOT WELCOME AT OB. if you want to watch your dog run around in circles and shit on the ground take it to a DOG PARK. thats what they are for. you see the brilliant linkage DOG - PARK. a park for dogs. the beach is not for dogs.

Maybe about 6-7 years back beautiful afternoon at OB the Mrs. decided to come with and sit on the beach while I surfed. She was in one of those lounge lizard type folding chair mats that sit right on the ground. She dozed off in the afternoon sun and was awaken by a warm liquid running down the back of her neck. An off leash shepherd-mutt had lifted his leg and pissed on her! WTF! Owner was not around to see or didn't really care.

BTW they're are more dogs than children living in the city. I'm a dog owner and realistically I think one off leash dog area at the ###### of beach is quite generous.... Funston is basically dog mania so this point is especially true if that remains the same. I didn't read it to know what will happen at ft. funston

You know that guy who cuts you off in traffic then throws YOU the bird? He's on the beach too. His dog throws you a blocking tackle during your barefoot sunset jog and then he hollers at YOU for running into his dog. There ought to be...well...a leash law!

I take my dogs to the beach sometimes. But I know which "lineup" to choose and don't mess with the locals (plovers). The only time they are off leash is at a part where there are walls and little to no habitat for anything other than graffiti and the occasional homeless. We play a quick game of fetch and put them on leash if anyone is near and always clean up after them. I can think of some kids that should probably stay on leash! I guess it's just a matter of being responsible. It 's like surfing. Know your place and things should go fine. I really hope Ft Fun$ton stays dog friendly.

Kok, why DO people bag the poop and then leave it? WTF is going through their head. They do it in the GGP and makes me crazy. There's plenty of trash containers around. Speaking of which, I wonder what the aliens will think when they land after the apocalypse and find the dumpsters near the dog park full of individually wrapped dog turds. They might think we're a little weird.

Because of SOME dog owners' lack of responsibility and self-enforcement regarding seasonal leash laws (and picking up after their dogs) at parts of the beach--and complaining about that a few years ago (see http://sf.metblogs.com/2006/11/07/leash-the-anti-leashers/)--now those owners who have been unwilling to self-enforce reasonable leash laws are facing a ban. Reap what you sow.

I have no issues with dogs on the beach, in fact, the Bo is very dog friendly. As long as the poo is taken out, let the dogs be there.

One of my biggest gripes about dogs is those who take them on leashes to crowded places like parades. They have no place at parades or in stores unless they're guide and or companion dogs.

Thanks, she's only 8 months old and still chewing everything up in the house. So gotta keep her busy with the chewy toys. I'll be taking her to the beach for her first visit soon.

I have a lot of friends who abuse the ADA and have their dogs tagged as "service animals". They then insist on taking them absolutely everywhere and get incredibly haughty and offended if someone dares suggest that perhaps their dog is not the best companion in (insert here: church, restaurant, etc).

Many of these people are young and able-bodied. None of them are blind.

Stacey always stays tied to the log, on leash. We all know (esp Kooktastic) what happens when she's off-leash.
The vet bills, personal complaints, and GGNRA tickets are too damn high! So I keep her on leash and out of trouble.
Personally I love to see dogs on the beach. It's like heaven for them, and I like to play with them too. And sentient beings on strings are amusing, if you will.
I know here's not the right forum to extol my position, but I just want to let the SR community know where I stand.

People who let their dogs poop on the beach (or leave plastic bags of dog poop on the beach) obviously don't care about laws- there are already several laws (and rules and regulations) against doing that. Its a civil society issue- you can't create good citizenship with new laws. Its like making a law that says you can't leave chewing gum on the floor of the movie theater... guess what, there is still gum on the floor.

Best I can recommend is when you see someone let their dog poop on the beach, pick it up and stuff it down their shirt. And don't ask them if they saw what the dog was doing, and give them a chance to pick it up first, that just ruins the surprise.

[disclosure: I own a dog and we run on OB off-leash, and I clean up after her]

[actually, when my dog poops on the beach, I put it in a plastic bag. I save them until I have enough to spell "ITS GOING OFF AT ######" in 10-ft letters on the beach in front of ######. Awesome.]

I have a dog. Birds are better than dogs. They can fly and catch fish. Their poop is much smaller. Some can actually sing. If you want to take your dog off leash just go to Fort Funston or McClaren Park. Never OB. It just never works out. If you do go to McClaren you may see raccoons, or possums or probably nothing but trees and a pond and blackberry's and an amphitheater that is not used much. On the way home stop by El Chico produce on Mission. There are rarely dogs there but the pollo adobado is to die for.... Crabs are good at the Manila Market... waiting for the swell to arrive

A dog ban is never going to work at OB. I love Snowy plovers - shoot all the ravens and crows at Pt. Reyes instead (to save plover eggs/young) , where they have 10 miles of seldom used beacn and don't have millions of people looking to hit the beach and exercise their dogs. If you're going to go bureacratic about the plover, ban dogs in front of the dunes. The north parking lot is so heavily used it's never going to be groovy for the birds unless they ban people. Or is that next?
